Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Trying to adjust the valves on a '94 pontiac grand prix SE with a 3100. Have been given advice on a couple of ways to do this and neither seem to be working.

Ok. I've read this in the repair manual. It doesn't state if each cylinder should be TDC on the 18 ft-lbs torque or should the cam lobe be at it highest point for each valve to set the 18 ft-lbs ? I know this sounds like a common sense issue ,but i still have "play" in each push rod when adjusted to this setting. Is this normal ?

Thanks for the help Dave. The push rods were stored in the same positions as they were taken out. My issue was understanding that the rocker arm nuts actually needed to be threaded all the way down and then the 18 ft-lbs applied. Also, looking at the last post you sent, the repair manual I have shows the bank of cylinders at the front of the engine to be the 2-4-6 and the rear bank of cylinders to be the 1-3-5. thanks again for the help. It has been greatly appreciated.

I'm almost certain that this engine does not have adjustable valve lifters. You simply tighten the rocker fastener to the specified torque and you're done. I'll post this and then get back in a few minutes with a definitive answer and torque specs after I check the manual.

The rocker arms are not adjustable, the hydraulic lifters will operate within their correct range when the arms are fastened right down. The specified torque is 18 ft-lbs.

    Hope this helps,
    Dave

It does not matter where the camshaft is. When you torque down the rocker, you do it slowly and simply allow the valves to open...or not. If the pushrods are loose after you have tightened all the rockers. You may have a problem with these valves or their corresponding lifter. If a valve stem is bent, the valve will not close all the way and the rocker would remain loose. The same would be true with a bad lifter. Your engine would run very poorly with a bent valve, a bad lifter is usually very noisy.

I think I just realized what is going on here. You have probably put the pushrods in the wrong place. They are different lengths! Do not run this engine! If you have already, or turned it over, you may have bent valves or at least pushrods. You have to now remove all the pushrods and roll them on a flat surface to see if any are bent. I will post back in a minute with the correct locations.

I believe this is the correct order but double check, the exhaust valves are the long ones.

The rear head (2-4-6) will have push-rods in the following
    configuration:
    short - long - short - long - long - short

The front head (1-3-5) will have push-rods in the following
    configuration:
    short - long - long - short - long - short

Glad to hear the rods pushrods were correct, sorry I went into panic mode when I started to think about the loose pushrods, and sorry about the misinformation...again, engaging mouth before brain. :-)

I was wondering is there a way to put a v8 caddy motor in a 96 pontiac grand prix se 2 door coup. The motor in my grand prix is a 3100 v6

I would get another 3100 because there is noway you want to try swapping them. It won't work. A used 3100 isn't that high any more.

Depends on what sub-model you have. If you have an SE its a 3100 3.1L Engine. If its a GT its a 3800 3.8L Engine. If its a GTP its a 3800 3.8L but with a supercharger.
