Question about 1998 Saturn SL

1 Answer

I have a 1996 Saturn SC2 DOHC automatic transmission that when reverse is selected it won't move til high RPM is applied. And only then it will move slightly....However the car drives and shifts fine in all foreward gears. I changed the fluid and filter thinking it had dirt in it. It didn't work! What's going on

The reverse band is slipping, and it could be a valve slipping,or hydraulics in the reverse servo, try a additive called LUBE GUARD ,it is available at napa, auto parts,it treats the valves in the valve body of the transmission,if it is a valve stuck in the valve body, this will fix it,if it does not solve the problem, the transmission shop will have to remove the transmission and rebuild it to fix the hydraulic problem.

Saturn sc2 problem

DTC P0732 sets when 2nd clutch still slips after the PCM has commanded high main line pressure
DTC P0734 sets when 4th clutch still slips after the PCM has commanded high main line pressure.
DTC P0733 sets when 3rd clutch still slips after the PCM has commanded high main line pressure.
The powertrain control module (PCM) uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor, input speed sensor (ISS) and output speed sensor (OSS) to determine engine speed, input shaft speed and output shaft speed. These sensor readings are used to determine the current gear ratio and RPM slip across the torque converter. The PCM uses this information from the sensors to determine if the commanded gear matches the actual gear. During normal driving conditions, the PCM will adapt main line pressure via the pressure control (PC) solenoid to prevent slipping and harsh shifts. Shift solenoid 2 is used to apply or release second gear clutch. The PCM controls 2nd gear by controlling the ground for shift solenoid 2. The PCM will turn the solenoid Off (open the driver circuit) when second gear is commanded On to apply 2nd clutch. Shift solenoid 2 is supplied ignition voltage from the fuel pump relay whenever the PCM commands the fuel pump relay On.
Do you know how to test main line pressure ? Also , with the valve body off air check clutch packs . Do you know how to do that ? How many miles on the trany ?

The transmission startedwith a loud clunking noise when shiftinginto reverse. It progressively got worse until it no longer moved in reverse. The lady had her son change the fluid but did not mention if he...

yes, change the filter and use proper fluid and level. filter might not be a stocking item at parts store. After you changed, pull negative battery term overnight to reset trans logic memory. May also be servo pack if it has one (does it make a short buzzing sound when going into gear?) they get clogged too as in a Chrysler transmission.

Chaged transmission on 1997 saturn now it will not

It sounds like you have the wrong transmission. If your car is a DOHC aka an SL2, SC2, or SW2 then you have an MP7 transmission. If you have a SOHC, aka a SL1, SC1, or SW1 then you have an MP6. You need the right transmission for the right motor...DOHC needs the MP7 while the SOHC needs the MP6.

On top of that, you need the correct gear ratios which changed over the years. Your '97 CANNOT use a '98-'02 transmission. It must be 1991-1997 if it is an MP7 or 1993-1997 if it is an MP6.

Otherwise the PCM will not shift the wrong transmission.

98 saturn won't shift out of park

There is a switch on the brake pedal, that activates a solenoid in the steering column, and the shifter, that releases them, either the switch,on the pedal,or the solenoid, are bad.
