Question about 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

Brakes make sqealing noise at first and are extremely grabby like the ABS is not working correctly. Rotors, shoes and pads are fine and it is not brake dust. Could it be the ABS or is there a proportioning valve not working correctly?

ABS won't make it grabby. Abs just pulses the brakes when a wheel stops turning during braking. Was there anything replaced recently in the brake system. If so was it done right? Please give some more details of what is happening. Squaling isn't unusual with brakes especially if they are wet. make sure it is not the wear indicators which can be on the back brake pad. I have seen one wear more than the other so make sure you can see both. Remove the tire and caliper if you can to properly inspect. If rotors were recently replaced were they conditioned before putting into service.

The loud grinding noise may be due to worn pads or brake shoes. I suggest you have all brakes on the vehicle inspected for worn pads, shoes, and possibly worn rotors. The ABS light may indicate uneven brake functioning, so for safty sake, have the brake system checked out.

How do you reset ABS sytem for 2005 mazda tribute rear brakes

There is a split valve on the rear brakes ensuring the correct amount of pressure build up compared to the front ones. Check the fluid is pumping through correctly.
There is no need to replace the reluctor rings as you have no ABS error.

How much does it cost to get ABS brakes fixed

ABS sensors are around $50 per wheel. If they are fine, then you just need typical brake component...pads, shoes, rotors etc.

My brakes make a noise when brake is pressed now abs light is on is it safe to drive

i would have the brakes checked out real soon, the brakes could be worn down past their limitations, abs light , is letting you know that the system has picked up a problem with the brake system.

When I brake there is a grinding and the petal flutters. I was told it was the sensor for the abs. how do you fix it.

If there is a grinding noise or "feeling" then you have worn your brakes down to the metal of the pads/shoes. Have your brakes serviced, and this will fix them right up.

This is a job that isn't too difficult for a do-it-yourself-er. However, if you continue to drive it this way, you will be forced to replace at least one rotor as well as the brakes. For most cars this isn't very expensive, except for the labor if you don't do it yourself.

I hope this helps.

1999 Chevy Tahoe- Soft Brake Pedal

Try having the dealer flush and bleed your system. It is very hard to bleed ABS systems yourself and have safe brakes that still work afterward. Bleeding non-ABS brakes yourself is easy not the same for ABS brakes. Valving, sensors and what-not require a tech and the correct equipment in my opinion. You do it wrong and you could ruin your ABS system. Do that and see if they firm up. I replaced my brake shoes/pads at the same time all new everything in back, drums/springs everything and new rotors up front. then I had the chevy dealer flush, refill and bleed system. Stiffer pedal and brakes work better. Keep in mind the brakes on 99 Tahoes are inaedequate, require new rotors often, heat up and fade/glaze pads regularly. I replace my pads long before they wear down because they glaze up and start fading early. I'll rough em up once maybe, next time, new ones. Every two brake jobs, new rotors for me. Just how it is. They will stiffen a bit and work better but they will never be awesome brakes. Just how it is on 99 and earlier Tahoes. Hope it helps. Very important to bleed correctly though. I'll bleed my 83 Toyota 4x4 myself but not the Tahoe.

I have a 2000 Cavalier, it started squeeling a little when stopping (but stops fine). The squeel got worse and now does it when i drive, and when i stop it makes a grinding noise buit still stops fine? Any...

The sqeal was the brakes warning you that they were getting low, when they were sqeeling all the time, they were telling you they were about gone. Now that they are grinding, you will most likely need rotors as well. Get them replaced asap !

'04 Corolla Grinding noise when breaking

Even though there may be some brake pad remaining, sometimes you need to machine or replace the rotors in order to get rid of a noise. Rotors can develop a bad wear pattern that acts against a glazed pad to produce a loud noise even if they are not worn out. Replace the front brakes, pads and rotors.
