Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Am

Pontiac grand am 2002 overheats, temp, jumps from 200 to 260 degres only after cold start, if i turn of the engine for a few minutes, to cool down the engine, it will work fine for the rest of the trip

2004 grand am, 3.4 l. It starts out cold, coolant is full, and within 5 minutes ithe gauge spikes, it overflows out the over flow hose. It will spike and then come on down. No excessive heat comes out...

Within 5 min is fast, this could be a thermostant thats not opening but i may want to have a block test done. this test will tell you if exhaust is entering the cooling system and stopping the flow making the engine overheat as fast as it does. before replacing a thermostant i would make sure its not a headgasket problem first. this test is easy and not expensive to do, with a fluid and the tester tube connected to top of radiator the fkuid turns from blue to yellow if exhaust is entering the cooling system. this is the first thing to do and if it passes this test then i would replace the hermostant. another thing i have found with these engines is that the intake manifold gaskets leak. make sure the cooling system is full and has no air in the system. there will be a few thing s to check if it passes the block test, for example runnuing the engine and when it starts to heat up the bottom hose and the top hose should be close in temp and if the fans are turnning on when it get up in temp.but first is the test then the thermostant assuming the cooling system is full first.hope this is helpful good day.

It is possible that your thermostat is stuck open. Normally, the thermostat remains closed when starting cold, confining coolant to the engine block and cylinder head until it heats up. Once the coolant in the block is warm (usually within 10 minutes), the thermostat begins to open and let coolant flow into the radiator to cool it down some. A properly operating thermostat will continue to cycle until the coolant reaches the operating temperature of the thermostat--usually around 180 deg F. Then the thermostat will continue to adjust its opening to maintain that temp.

Thermostats can get stuck in both closed and open positions. When stuck closed, the engine will quickly overheat. When stuck open, the engine will take forever to warm up--especially in cold weather because the coolant is continually pushed into the radiator and cooled off before it ever has a chance to get warm. Changing the inexpensive thermostat may help correct your condition.

when cold loosen rad cap slightly and run until engine fan kicks in then carefully with rag remove cap and check level( don't worry it won't be under pressure.) and top up if needed check coolant reservoir level as well.than secure rad cap

The fans only come on 2 cool down the engine if it is not hot they wont come on,but if it become hot they should kick on and cool ur vehicle down unless the main fuse for the fans are blow out, It sounds like your thermostat is out, I need more additional information from you, please text me at 4195458235 for 24/7 support

Going thru coolant like crazy but theres no leak. we done so much so far. we put a water pump in and a therpasat in and sencer in and intake gaskets

Well first off, since you have replaced many parts, perhaps you have air in the system. Also check the oil to see if it looks like chocolate milk or is extremely high (indicating a blown head gasket).
While system is cold, add coolant to the radiator (if applicable) and the coolant tank. Then start the vehicle and turn the heater on high heat - full blast. Let run for 15 minutes or until the engine begins to overheat or the coolant tank become empty. Let the vehicle cool down (30 minutes) then repeat until it coolant level doesn't drop or engine doesn't overheat.
Now go for a test drive for about 10 - 15 miles make sure to take hills and highway/freeway. Let vehicle cool down and recheck coolant tank and radiator. If level has gone down then something is wrong. Perhaps the thermostat is in backwards.
