SOURCE: 1997 explorer how do i adjust the handbrake?

You have to adjust the break off the back caliper. however most cars have self adjusters. My guess is that you used your E brake alot and stretched the cable that goes to it.

SOURCE: replace rear brakes adjust handbrake

The hand brake hardly ever needs ajusting. See your hand brake mechanincly spreads your rear brake shose inside the drum. Therefore just replace your rear shoes and make sure there ajusted right and you should have no more problems with that part of your car. PS make sure you put some 3M paste on the contact points on your backing plate to avoid a squeak in the near future.

remove the back brake drums ,slacken handbrake cable then run a mini grinder around the lip on the edge of the drum .Then adjust the auto adjusters manully so when the drum is push on it just goes on ,tap with a hammer all around the drum to level the shoes and if need be adjust up a bit more ,then when finished re-adjust the cable so you have three notches on handbrake lever

How do i replace my hand brake cable on my ford falcon XH ute

wait a bit ....is it rear disc or rear drums on that ute

will assume its under dash hand brake pull lever tyoe

the disc setup may have single cables for each rear
rear disk brake cable is approx $ 150

if your XH it is close to the XE and XF set up drums
a complete one line loop cable outer and inner
with plastic grommets along the back chassis rail ( they break )
so the one inner cable works both rear handbrake shoes

hand brake cable is a shorty

undo the adjustment thread
just below the hand brake cable point up somewhere above the gearbox
(drums )
after new cable fitted
drums are adjusted with the old school way with the handbrake adjuster tool
handbrake cable adjusted

then the handbrake handle when pulled out to hold needs14 plus clicks
comes out a long way for some weird reason
on drums
if cable adjustment is done wrong onrear drums the handbrake cable will come loose in the drum as you drive along

How do I adjust my handbrake on a ford transit 05

if rear drums then you need to remove the drums ,clean the lip on the outside of the drum the adjust the brakes up manually and they will fit snug with the lip removed ,use a small radial disk cutter for this ,then the handbrake will be right and the footbrake will be hard as well ,just adjusting the cable will result in the vehicle failing the inspection due the handbrake lever inside the drum being over the 180? position ,us old fleet diesel fitters never die we answer questions on here

1996 ford exsplorer parking brake adjusment, do i need a special tool it has disc brakes

No special tool needed, the adjustment is on the inside of the back wheel drums, there is a little inspection hole usually plugged with a rubber grommet, remove the grommet and use a flat screwdriver to adjust the brake shoes, you might need a torch to get you started, I changed my brake shoes about two weeks ago on my 1996 ford explorer, I had no handbrake and when I stripped the back drums to get to the brake shoes it was virtually metal on metal, no brake shoe left at all. let me know if this helps, cheers Rockie

My handbrake needs adjusting in my Toyota Corolla 1994. Can u please explain how this adjustment is done.

Hello, My usual Brands are Ford products, but Foreign cars usually use simple, less expensive ways to do things. Assuming the brake pads are good, there should be a cable connected to the handbrake. You would usually pull the handbrake up to engage about 1/4 the way to engagement and lock it there.
Then you would go underneath the car and find the cable that stretches from the handbrake lever to a juction with a second cable. There should be an adjusting thread somewhere at this intersection.

With the rear wheels off the ground, you would tighten the nut on the threads of the handbrake cable until you hear rubbing in the rear brakes. Then get inside the car and pull back on the handbrake lever and you should not be able to move the rear wheels with the handbrake set. You then release the handbrake 100% and the rear wheels should turn mostly without noise.

Now if you can not find an adjustment nut under the car, it is possible the handbrake adjustment nut is under the handbrake cover/boot inside the car. Still use the same process of setting the lever 1/4 engaged and tightening the threaded cable until the rear wheels start dragging.

I hope this helps you.

parking brakes are self adjusting. I suspect you rear brakes are not self adjusting. too much clearance to the brake drum to brake shoes. May need to replace rear brakes and self adjusters. (hardware)
