Hi! The black box at the top of the cylinder is where the brake fluid reservoir sits. Its kinda unique but there are some models that has the same brake specs like the 91 trans am. Hope this helps and have a good one!

  • Greg Bernett

Okay...reading your post I see that you have jumped all around with your question is...so you say you have identified the black box you posted...and your engine bogs down when you step on it...and you mention a few sensors....so what is the problem? You have too much being said when we can't see what the other expert has posted to you so it is a chopped up conversation being read by us.

Could you post what the problem is with your car now along with the parts you have changed. The size engine year/make and model also.

I re-read all the posts and i did not see anyone mention...

    1.) exhaust back pressure
2.) vacuum reading at the MAP
    3.) base engine compression

assuming the location I'd say its the ESC (electronic spark control) but from the picture you posted I'd say no...

so I took the book and the picture I sent you earlier and then looked up ALL the parts on an auto parts website and.....

FOUND IT....the answer is it is the headlight control module!!!

Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

Now the picture you showed me is a headlamp door module, the one I sent you is a est module, the auto parts store sells the est module, not sure about the headlamp door module, just call auto parts store, see if they list one.

It should be on the firewall,is this a 5.0 or 5.7 engine?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

Yes it looks just like this, this is the one for the 5.0,the 5.7 does not have one,the est module should be on a bracket, most likely near,or on top of the valve cover. The knock sensor, and the est,and the ignition module work together for advancement of the timing when needed.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

That picture is of a solenoid most likely for e g r .Has this engine ever been changed?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

If you like take some pictures of the top of the engine.let me see the set up ,maybe I can shed some light on the situation.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

I am going to assume it does not have the est,the ignition module, and the knock sensor will control the timing,so check the voltage with key on at the knock sensor, with a digital volt meter only, you can short the computer if you use analog it should read 5 volts.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

est is electronic spark control, and yours is in the knock sensor,on this model,do not no why,but it is,some models are like that, but the vin will not help me,but the knock sensor circuit will have to be the problem,or the ignition module.or the circuit itself, see what the volts are at the knock sensor.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

By the looks of the engine compartment,it does not have the est module,it is done by the knock sensor, and ignition module, crazy configuration I know, but that is the deal.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

The circuit is the wire, check the volts there, lets see what is going on.Did you instal a new ignition module?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

it may just be the ignition module

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

    good idea

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

Let me see a picture of it

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

The module is a headlamp door relay,it most likely is a timed thing, but the reading for the circuit to the knock signal sounds ok.Head from the testing of the ignition module yet?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

have you disconnected the negative battery terminal and replaced it back to reset the computer, and clear the codes?,try is again, and leave it unplugged for 25 seconds, see what happens.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

The pick up coil in the distributor tells the computer to pulse the injectors, from the start only,if you spray starting fluid in the intake, and it starts, and keeps running, then the pick up coil would be the problem.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

Does the map have vacuum to it?when it is running?if not get vacuum to it.I am working on two clients right now, trying to keep yall separate on everything so if I say something just remind me or correct me,this car will run,but no acceleration ,correct?how is the vaccum to the mapp?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

The throttle position sensor can cause this also, but the code issaying est,so I am assuming it is in the distributor,or knock sensor circuit.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

mapp sensor, does it have vacuum with engine running?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

running rough, does it have rich exhaust?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

Here is what I think the problem is,the pick up coil,in the distributor,it is part of the circuit, est, ignition module, and spark,it is a coil that generates a hall effect sort of,when the coil gets old it leaks pulse, and then it will not pulse, this happens quickly and irractict,I think this is the problem, seeing the code that it is giving.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 25, 2010

By the way the pick up coil is not exspensive,7 or 8 dollars

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 26, 2010

I am at work now looked up some thing, the 8th digit in the vin,if it is a e ,it takes a different knock sensor, make sure the connector is white in color,if the vin has a f it takes a black connector on the sensor itself, this maybe why the light is still on,it makes a difference witch sensor it uses.let me know something, thanks Ron

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 26, 2010

You need part number dks200 ech napa brand/knock sensor

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 26, 2010

If you have the new knock sensor with the black connector, then it is most likely the problem,it needs to have the white connetor on it where the wire connector connects to it,this would be for E in the vin number, the 8th digit.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 27, 2010

If the est module is not on the firewall behind the distributor towards passengers side, the by pass circuit is built into the ignition module, but check the knock sensor,I am sure it is in it,the problem, double chek the color of the knock sensor connector,on the knock sensor, white,or black, 8th digit in the v i n number will tell witch one to use,it will matter,if the wrong knock sensor is installed, this maybe why you still have the problem,,,,let me know

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 27, 2010

The reference signal is threw knock circuit signal witch has 4.5 volts.witch is good, the by pass is working cuase the ignition module checked good,,,witch knock sensor did you put on the engine?white connector?or black connector on the knock sensor?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 27, 2010

    hope this helps

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 27, 2010

this might help on locations, let me know if you get these

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 27, 2010

If you did not get these schematics,or the component locations,I sent ,let me know.

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Apr 28, 2010

I will send them, but email me so I can, some reason, they will not go on here,,,I was asking about the color of the plastic connector, that is made on the knock sensor that you installed, this will matter if you have the wrong one,you will still have the same problem, and the code, there is a black ,and a white, not the wire.

Replaced both clipers on rear and rotors, bleed the lines, good brake padel, they are hard don't want to stop the car right away, can anyone make help me on this issue i am having.

The most obvious cause for a hard pedal is simply not enough vacuum. Check the hose running to your booster.could be a bad check valve in booster. To check remove valve from booster hose, Blow through the valve, if you can blow through it, it is bad. if you cant its ok! With car off. Pump the brakes until all air is out of booster. Hold brake down, then start car. if the pedal sinks a little. the booster is ok. If above fails, replace booster. If need be, you can check the rear brakes and see if one is sticking first! Make sure the caliper pins are well greased and slide good. God-Bless! a sticking caliper will cause a hard pedal.

If you have the foot on the brake when stopping and it stalls , try slowing down and stopping on the hand brake to see if the engine stalls . If it doesn't stall on the hand brake then I would suspect a leak in the brake booster that is affecting the engine by letting air into the manifold through the activated booster. If there is no difference have the fault codes read as there may be a missing/ faulty vacuum line connected to a actuator in the gear box.

How do you replace the brake light switch? 2004 discovery series 2

The brake light switch is under dash at pedal. To remove, push the pedal forward, there is a sleeve that has to be pulled forward, and then the switch removes out the back. --------- The pedal box is attached to the bulkhead, above the footwell where your pedals go up and through to the engine compartment. Lift the bonnet, and over on the right side you'll see your brake master cylinder. It is mounted to the brake booster (like a big black doughnut. The booster is attached to the front of the pedal box. Thats where you'll find the brake light switch, with two wires attached.------------ This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

I have very little rear brakes on my 91 w350. the shoes are fine and so are the wheel cylinders. I have recently replaced the master cylinder and had the system power bled at a shop. Is it the...

I assume you bled the rest of the system. If so check your rear adjustment. Adjust the parking brake at the same time. If no fix, then open up your rear brakes and inspect the hardware, cylinder/caliper, and adjuster. Only after all that would I suspect the proportioning valve. Ways to test that vary vehicle to vehicle. Good luck!

How difficult is it to replace the brake booster on a 2002 Volvo S80? Dealer wants $1000 . I think I can do it but do not have a procedure or if any special tools are required??

Brake Booster replacement:

First start by Disconnecting the Battery.

Then open the hood and remove the Upper torque mount cross member.

Next remove the Air filter housing.

The remove the Big Cover over the Relay/fuse panel under the hood.
Once the cover is off remove the 13mm nut for the Positive cable.

Then remove the 2 screws securing the Relay box into place.(one of the screws is under where the positive cable just came off)Unplug the one harness from the box and move the box to the side.

Then reach under and unplug the ABS module. There is 2 plugs. One you have to push a little tab and fold the cover back to release the plug. The other is 2 push tabs then pull.

Ok here is where it will get a little tricky. Look where the ABS pump motor assembly bolts to the body. There is 3 10mm bolts remove them and make sure the pump motor is loose.(No need to disconnect the lines)
Remove the 2 screws holding the Master Cylinder to the booster.Unplug the sensor in the booster. Remove the Line and Valve from inside the booster.

That should be about it from outside till the booster is loose.

Inside the car:

Remove the Lower dash panel on the drivers side.
Then remove the clip holding the brake pedal to the booster. Either slide the Pin out or slide the Arm off.(Forget which it has). Then remove the 4 13mm screws holding the Booster to the Firewall.

Now go back outside:

Then slide the Master cylinder off of the Booster and kind of pull and move to the side.
Might require Carefully bending some of the lines. Then slide the Booster out.(Most of the times it takes some work to get it slid out. It might take some time to slide it out just take your time.

Then install in reverse order.

It will take a little time to do. About 1/2 a day at home with Hand tools.

Sorry forgot to tell you to make sure you check the adjustment on the brake light switch when you are done.

Brake Booster

ok i tried to find a pic for you but that thing is tucked way in there lol. It is painted flat black and has the brake resevoir bolted onto the front. Now before you go and buy one, check the vacuum line that attaches to it. I think it has a white plastic fitting that pushes into the booster, and this sometimes cracks if engine work is done near it. Let me know if this helps :)
