Question about 1993 Toyota Corolla

Starter motor on corolla 1990 1600

Starter tests out ok on bench. when placed in vehicle all that happens is that the solenoid engages. permanent power is present on starter. battery reads 12.6 v. i have a spare starter motor and this gives exactly the same problem. --- by the way when the engine is warm the starter normally works although not always.

    thanks for the reply. i had already realized that this was the problem and replaced the earth strap.sometimes it is to easy to overlook the obvious.

?Had a new starter and new battery put on my 1999 Chevy Tahoe.. we by it starts sometimes and sometime it don't..what could the problem be


I'm assuming just by the fact you had a new battery and new starter that sometimes when you turn the key to the start position , nothing happens . Is your vehicle a automatic transmission ? When it doesn't start have checked for battery voltage at the starter solenoid S terminal ? Is there B+ voltage at pins 30 & 86 for the starter relay ? Pin 86 while cranking the engine or trying to crank the engine over . Pin 30 check with key on . Try moving gear selector to neutral . Videos on youtube for basic automotive electrical testing . Starting System Circuit Description
Voltage is applied at all times to the ignition switch from the IGN A fuse 6 through CKT 242 (RED). When the ignition switch is turned to the START position, voltage is applied to the CRANK fuse 8 through CKT 5 (YEL). From the CRANK fuse 8, voltage is either applied to the clutch pedal position switch (M/T) or the transmission range switch (A/T) through CKT 806 (PPL). When either the clutch is disengaged (M/T) or the transmission is in park or neutral (A/T), voltage is applied to the coil of the starter relay through CKT 1035 (PPL/WHT). Since the starter relay is permanently grounded at ground G105 through CKT 150 (BLK), the starter relay energizes.
Voltage is applied at all times to the starter relay contacts from IGN A fuse 6 through CKT 242 (RED). When the starter relay energizes, the starter relay contacts close, and voltage is applied to the starter motor solenoid. Since the starter motor solenoid is permanently case grounded, the starter motor solenoid will energize two coils. The pull-in winding coil energizes in order to pull the starter motor solenoid contacts closed. When the contacts close, a plunger on the contacts causes the pull-in winding coil circuit to open. The hold-in winding coil then holds the starter motor solenoid contacts closed. Voltage is then applied to the starter motor from the battery through CKT 1 (BLK) and the closed contacts of the starter motor solenoid. Since the starter motor is also permanently case grounded, the starter motor will run until the ignition switch is moved out of the START position. When this happens, a spring in the starter motor solenoid moves the starter motor solenoid contacts and the plunger back to the rest position.

Arctic cat 2000 300 4wd starter would not engage. I pulled starter tested on bench engages ok. where starter mounts in hole feels like gear in there turns free what does starter engage into help


did you test the battery on the cat low battery will cause engagement problems ---starter damaged or weak my be good under bench test with out a load --or miss aligned and wasnt meshing with flywheel

1992 nissan maxima se 3.0 L new starter, solenoid, all relays, ignition switch still wont engage when jumping solenoid just bendix sound if I use ignition sw.wont do nothing help plz


If the starter works on the bench and you are manually energising the solenoid (to the little terminal) then it should work on the car if the battery is good and all the wiring and ground connections are good.

Shorting the two large solenoid terminals will just switch on the motor without engaging the pinion.

In your position I would have fitted a temporary starter switch until I found time to sort the problem out.

I suggest you remove the column shroud to expose the ignition switch wiring and bridge the supply to the starter terminal and if it starts the ignition starter switch (or the internal drive) is faulty and if it doesn't there is a wiring problem between the switch and the starter.

STARTER MOTOR ENGAGING ALL THE TIME


I would suspect the ignition switch. Power has to be getting to the starter solenoid to activate it. See if you can disconnect the power going into the switch, If the problem stops,.... solved. If problem persists, look for loose wire that could be shorting at the solenoid.

When you turn the ignition and it clicks but will not turn over and the lights still work what could it be


low battery, battery cables not making secure connection, battery terminals oxidized or needing cleaning/brushing .... failed starter .... tap the starter with a wrench, it can revive it :)

Okay it says you checked starter motor and it tested good. what test did you perform? A bench test would tell you if solenoid is good or bad. Try this With starter in vehicle and key on, jump positive power to solenoid it should spin and engage flywheel and start vehicle

New starter installed spins but wont engage ingine


The starter sprocket wheel is thrusted into engaging the flywheel by a big solenoid. That solenoid is integral part of the starter motor. If the starter turn itself but it doesn't turns the engine then either it was incorrectly installed or the thrust solenoid is defective.
Simple test: take out the starter, attach it to a bench, connect to it thew power cables from a battery (the minus one to the body, the plus one to the big connector bolt) then short the big connector bolt to the small one with a screwdriver - the solenoid should activate, the sprocket should be thrusted forward and the motor should start spinning it.
If that doesn't happen then the starter you just bought is defective, replace it. If that happens the starter was incorrectly installed on the engine. Reinstall it correctly.

your barking up the wrong gum tree witht the starter motor ,you have an electrical supply problem on the battery terminal area with more than one wire connected or a dodgy earth cable from the engine to the chassis .i would be inclined to check and fit another earth cable from a good connection on the engine -(bell housing) and run it back to battery terminal to eliminate all posibilitys .before anything else ,make you own if you have to but only use copper cable .this is my last question for tonight ,have to go pick er indoors up from work now

Starter won't engage - won't start.


2nd click could be fuel pump engaging...what about the fuses under the hood... is there gas getting to the engine?? is there a safety shut off switch that needs resetting? have you checked the ground wire?
