Question about 1996 Mazda Pickup

2 Answers

Occasionally, after a short trip, there is no connection between the engine and the drive shaft and the truck is towed to my mechanic. After sitting on his lot for a day or two it works fine and he can find nothing to fix. This has happened three times now and I've lost all confidence in its use.

There seemed to be no relationship between my problem and the proposed solution

Yes, I can run through all of the gears easily, race the engine but the energy is not passed through the transmission to the rear wheels. After being towed to my mechanic the truck will sit overnight and then every thing else functions normally. Twice this has occurred after a short drive, stopping and turning the engine off. Once it happened while the truck was being driven at highway speeds. I'm told that there was a "lurch" followed by no power. At the mechanic's shop where it was towed once again it functioned properly and the next day I drove it home.

What do you mean no connection between the engine and drive shaft???

Do you mean the transmission is not working?

Please clarify.

Sounds like you either have a problem with the front pump of the transmission not working properly once warmed up, or once the fluid gets warm the clutches are slipping.....in any case go see a transmission specialist....many mechanics are not able to properly diagnose todays transmissions, as they are more complicated than those of the past.

Autozone's website has a 'free online repair guide' that covers some models. I'd try there first. If not, you're probably going to have to break down and get a manual.

Yes it is OK. Generally speaking it is only automatics that have a problem when towed.

Hi, I recently purchased a 2004 Dodge stratus. Shortly after I purchased this, my engine light turned on. I didn't notice any mechanical problems, but the person I purchased it from brought a tester...

I wouldn't be going on any long trips with it. However, more than likely, its not going to let you sit. But, not knowing the code that it is throwing, I can't give you concrete advice. If the engine seems to be running fine, its probably ok, but if its running rough or hesitating, don't go out with it if you don't want to have to call a tow truck.

I am planning to drive from Dallas to Madison and will be towing the 2000 Catera. Do I just put the car in neutral? Are there any issues with towing this car, i.e. overheating the transmission? Thanks,...

Hi, you should rent a tow dolly from U-Haul. Pulling with a tow bar in neutral that far will most likely mess up the transmmission. If it front wheel drive a dolly will do, no need for a full trailer. U-Haul will ask for car specs and give you the correct device. I've used them, costs about $100 per 350 miles, or the like.......Mike

How to tow a s10 blazer with an auto trans

Be certain that the wheels can not turn the transmission because with the engine off the transmission will not pump fluid through the transmission, and if the vehicle is towed without dis-connecting the drive shaft(s) there will usually not be very much left of the automatic transmission if it is towed that way for more than even a mile. The best way to tow that vehicle is to put it on a flat bed or trailer, or be certain to dis-connect the drive shaft(s) (both if 4 wheel drive) from the axle(s) and wire up the drive shaft(s) underneath the vehicle, and the drive shaft(s) will not turn if dis-connected from the axle(s) and they will be alright to wire up under the vehicle while the vehicle is being towed.

This is a very difficult one to pinpoint. The actual plug on the crank sensor could be shorted,The ignition module located under the under coil packs have shorted in some cases I have seen and do what you are saying. There are extensive testing procedures for testing everything from ECM to cam sensor.could possibly as simple as a ground short.I am sorry I cant give you a better diagnosis but suggestyou have someone with experience in wiring trouble shooting.

Check Engine light flickers occasionally

Check the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter might be bad; but I would check the oxygen sensor first. Also clean the cold air intake sensor, if there is something cover it then you'll see the checkengine flickers on but your engine is running fine.
