In a private shop? Well that is completely up the that private mechanic. Depending on the person's age, experience, and tools to diagnose and repair today's vehicles. The labor rate could be between $10 to $40 per hour.
And to answer your question about the cost to replace the fuel-pump. I would guess it would be between $240 (at $10 per hr.) to $360 ($40 per hr.).
But keep in mind, it is common practice that a shop and/or mechanic will mark up the parts that were purchased. But it is not common for a mechanic to charge the customer for a tool that was needed that they didn't have. If they charge you for it then take the tool, it belongs to you.

Oh and I've said too much all ready, lol, but just for your information. An estimate is not a quote.
If the mechanic guesses that your repair will cost $300. and after it is done, the bill is $500. Find out why. Hopefully the mechanic called you and let you know that during the repair there were unforeseen problems which would result in additional costs.
If you were given no heads up, no ability to change your mind due to the new circumstances. then you can try to try to negotiate or settle on a more appropriate, now due amount or you may need to take that person to small claims court. Also know that while the car is in his posestion it is there duty to make sure the car is safe from damage so make sure that when you get your car back it is in the same or better condition then when you left it. Also write your mileage down, some small, less profetional shops are known to use customers cars for personal use rather then a test drive.

Hello, The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. Remove the exhaust, Disconnect and remove all hoses and lines, also disconnect all electrical wires, remove 4 bolts from straps holding tank. Drop tank down. Remove lines and hoses from top of fuel pump module, remove lock ring, pull fuel pump module, turn unit as necessary so you don't destroy the fuel level sender. Hope this helps

Hey i have a cadillac sedan deville 1992 where is the fuel pump located

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. On these GM cars, the fuel tank must be dropped in order to change the pump. It is alos recomended that the fuel filter be changed at the same time which is on the frame of the vehicle, left side. the pump at autozone runs about $75 and don't forget the strainer for about $10. The filter runs about$10 also.

Have 1989 CADILLAC DEVILLE ,WAS RUNNING FINE BUT REPLACED THEMOSTAT AND NOW SOUNDS LIKE TRYING TO START BUT NOT . DONT NOW IF FUEL PUMP NEEDS TO BE RESET OR WHERE ITS AT ON CAR? ANBODY HELP THANKS

the fuel pump is inside the tank. did the distributor cap get wet when you were installing the thermostat? check to see if the wires are pluged into the distributor cap well. if you use a fuel pressure gage you will be able to determine if the fuel pump is working.
