My 92 jeep cherokee sport won't start getting fire and gas and has a slight back fire when turning over changed cranking sensor but still will not start what else could cause this?


old old jeeps..... which engine, the 4.0L inline 6? why not say ?
well here are the proper linear steps.
1: fuses good battery charged, and cranks robustly.
2: compression over 150psi, WOT. if not fix that. ?
3: spark strong to all cylinders not just 1.?
4: spark timing check show its still firing near 0 TDC.
5: at the point in time, it will run on test fuel for at least 3 seconds.
does it, feel better now? that you can see it run?
if not the CAT may be melted and blocking engine exhaust 100%
6; and last is fueling (the ECU cuts fuel or 3 reasons, )
dead cam/crank sensors, or dead tacho line.
7: ok check fuel pressure next.

i skipped the all important scantool because we dont have one
1988 to 92.. (not until 1993 do they work OTC tools)

the crank sensor is tricky to replace.
its not just jammed in a hole.
did you read the FSM Book first. before touching it.
some have a paper sticky tape on the end (jeeps do)
and when you start car first time, the tape flies off getting that critical gap correct. (pure magic no?)
if not done right, you now have 2 problems.... not good that.

I just repaced the right front speed sensor in my 2009 jeep patriot limited and the lights are still on.how long til it resets or how do i reset it?


speed sensor (which one) my guess the story goes.
CEL came on
went to autozoned, they scan it and get , undisclosed DTC error
you then see the word speed, and starter replacing any of 4 speed sensors on car.
the scan tool has a reset button, use that first.
if the problem is still there, it will NEVER CLEAR, (by Design)
why not post the DTC errors we can all wax smarter, x10
no engine option stated,
no transmission option either.

the engine can have 2 speed sensors, CKP and CMP, crank and cam.
the trans up to 3 speed sensors.
gue$$ing is expen$ive.
no?

Smoke idling


It depends on the color of the smoke. If it is a black smoke, it is probably oil burning ing the engine. This can be caused by worn rings, bad valve stem seals, a bad PCV valve. It can also be a problem with the engine running rich. On late model cars with o2 sensors, a yellow light in your dash will usually come on indicating a problem. When it is scanned a code will show up with fuel mixture problem which is usually caused by a failing o2 sensor.. If it is a very light smoke, you could have a head gasket on it's way out.

After replacing all lifters, push rods, and rocker assembly, engine still ticks near #3 cyl.


Need to adjust #3 valves. They are still a little loose sounds to me.

I turn ignition to ready position. The fuel pump engages and prime's the line. I then start the engine. Engine starts and runs for a max of 15 seconds. As soon as the engine cuts out the fuel pump...


The crank sensor is a good candidate. Pretty common failure on jeeps.
To clarify, the fuel pump is on all time during engine cranking, and during engine running. When the engine cuts off, the pump will also be stopped. But, you will not lose pressure in the fuel lines and fuel rail immediately. The check valve in the pump is supposed to hold fuel pressure in the system for a good time-about 20 minutes. The pressure should bleed off very slowly.

Your fuel pump and fuel system is probably good, but if you really lose prime (or pressure) that quickly, then there is a problem. Best way to check is with a fuel pressure gauge after the engine cuts out. Or, if you have the test port schraeder valve on the fuel rail (looks like a tire valve), you can use a screwdriver to press the center of the valve. If gas squirts out, you do have fuel pressure, prime is not lost, fuel system is good, and you can assume problem is in the ignition circuit, not a fuel problem. Probably the crank position sensor.

Signs of a bad valve cover gasket


My first question would be, what was the original trouble code that directed the mechanic to replace the sensors ? You seldom need more than one O2 sensor at a time. Its possible the exhaust manifold is leaking and that might cause a problem that would turn on the warning light. Or it could be something else.
A valve cover gasket will leak oil if it fails. No check engine light.

96 jeep grand cherokee. i changed my rotor and distributor cap and not the jeep want turn over i believe i got the plugs correct but how do i check my work? if you was building this car for the first time...


just answered this and the web site crashed .try again 153624 is the firing order ,to check it out just remove the rocker cover and check the valves ,using a rachet on the bottom pulley bolt turn engine till exhaust valve closes then turn some more till inlet valve opens keep turning slowly and when inlet valve closes and you turn a fraction then rotor arm will be pointing at no1, difference between valves when you look at them easy the exhaust valve lines up with the exhaust manifold
