Question about Cadillac DeVille

Re: 90"s Cadillac Northstar Engines; research on the purchase of one of these cars leads me to believe that these engines tend to overheat due to common head gasket failure. Any opinions? Thanks, Don

I accept your premise, but after looking at many Northstar engine powered Cadillacs, I have seen an inordinate number of head gasket failures as compared to Camaro engines (3800), Ford engines, etc.

The percentage of failed head gaskets with the Northstar engine as compared with others is far higher, in my experience of looking for a used car. Coincidence?

    Thanks,

    Don

Hi,

Not specifically as there are a number of reasons for the engine to get hot. Yes one of the major reasons is head gasket failure but not all Northstar engines heat issues are for this reason.

If you have a general feeling that Cadillac Northstar Engines has a head gasket failure I would say NO. Its a wrong conception.

If it is a 4.9L it is NOT a Northstar Engine, The 4.6L Engine WAS A Northstar.

I just purchased a 1999 Cadillac Deville. Drove fine for a few days. Today I drove 75 MPH for 20 miles on freeway and car began to overheat. Dashboard told me to replace oil. Checked the coolant, it took 1...

When a Cadillac (Northstar) overheats, It will give the message to change the oil. If you run a Northstar and keep running it long enough it will start shutting off cylinders and stop the A/C compressor to help protect itself. In this condition I would check for a blown headgasket. Possibly your technican will find the problem. Could also be stuck thermostat, dirty radiator Thanks

I have a Cdillac Deville 98 northstar. Getting an Error message - Engine overjeat, Change Engine oil, Check Coolant level and later I get Idle engine message I changed engine oil and coolant recently -1500...

Whatever you do, NEVER allow this engine to overheat and always use the correct antifreeze (DEX COOL) or you will damage your heads severly. The heads were made from aluminum so there is a very serious warping issue on the 1998 Cadillac Northstar engines. There should have been a recall but wasnt, ended up costing me 3 thousand USD to fix the engine problems I had but she now runs fine. I only had the car 4 months before this happened so someone prior to me owning evidentaly let it overheat on too many occassions and I had no choice but to fix cause I was still paying on the car!! Good luck

I have a 99 deville w/ 32valve north star engine and i have problems with it over heating i changed the water pump the radiator and thermostat i have no leaks but it still wont stopover heating

It is probably a head gasket issue if you have replaced the thermo and the pump and it still overheats. You probably can drive it 15 minutes or so and then the gauge starts soaring towards overheat shortly there after. Under completely normal driving conditions. Northstar engine's actually don't overheat not from bad head gaskets (they aren't the defect issue) but the inferior bolts holding the heads to the block. The bolts have been found to be pulling out of the Northstar's soft aluminum block(this is the actual problem but it's blamed on the gaskets). Causing spaces between the block, gaskets and the head that allows hot exhaust air to seep into the coolant flow chambers. This why your have coolant bubbling out of the top of the overflow valve under the hood after only short drives. Under normal operation the engine is literally boiling it's own water supply. The head bolt issue is a design flaw by GM and one that leads to a great number of Northstar engines being crippled at well under 100K miles of driving. Only remedy is to have both heads pulled off the engine, the head bolt replaced with new gasket and you're all set. Bad new very labor intensive whcih = a several thousand dollar repair. I had it happen to my 1998 Concourse Deville. I feel your pain.

I want to buy a 99 cadillac deville and I was told it was only a head gasket problem (blown) what other items should I review before purchasing this vehicle. The owner claims she never let the car overheat...

poor choice if purchased. The head bolts tend to break and to have it repaired is very costly for they are slender and long. . A 99 Cadillac is too old for they have many modules operating this vehicle and the shocks themselves run nearly $1000 each. Back off on this deal

There seems to be no recovery tank for my radiator is there supposed to be one

On the northstar engines, there is no "recovery tank".

You will have a Surge tank (or expansion tank).

It's there for two reasons.

1...to allow for expansion of the coolant.

2...To purge air out of the system (the cooling system is self purging on these engines).

In your car,I believe the tank is on the drivers side close to the strut tower.

Overheating,eveything looks ok.

I have a 97 Cadillac Deville with a northstar engine and have replaced it twice so far, so i answer this by experience...i've noticed to my two prior engines that went bad that the normal temp should NOT EXCEED 228 (normal), the red overheating light will come on at 250 and at 260 it will beep and tell you to stop engine - idle engine and will begin to smoke (overheat).

I hope this helps you and anyone else...by the way if your asking why did i replace my engine twice is simply because my cadillac is super clean inside and out, immaculate condition.

Northstar Engine

First NORTHSTAR ( 1992 ) engines were quite troublesome, from faulty starters ( in the middle of the engine ) to loss of oil pressure.
