Question about 1984 Chevrolet K2500

1 Answer

I have a 1984 Chevy K-10 with the 305 motor. I can drive for days and everything is fine and then all of a sudden the truck will lose power and barely hit 5 MPH floored. Mecahnic was sure it was carb so we rebuilt it and still have issues, we relpced the Catalytic converter, the transmission filter and still have issues. Thers seems to be no ryhme or reason as to when it does it or how long it will las. It can be bogged down for a week or run great for two weeks. When it acts up it seems to be the engine is revving fine but now the mecahnic is thinking choke. We are totally baffled. Anyone ever heard of anything this crazy? There is only 80,000 original on this truck.

I would suspect a fuel pump issue. You will need to check pressure when this happening.

by the way there is rhyme and reason. The mechanic has cost you unnessasarily because some of the parts have nothing to do with your issue. If you suspect the choke as being the cause just wire it open. for awhile. Only time you need a choke is for cold starts. If it still happens its not the choke. You can hook up a fuel pressure gauge and drive the truck until it happens. Since the gauge is hooked up you will be able to to verify if the pump is the issue. This is the only way a pro can pinpoint the problem. We can't fix something if its not broken when you bring it in. All we can do is guess.

My guess would be the transaxle.
Pump, clutches, valve body, solenoids, torque converter, and so on.
A mechanic might give you some suggestions after a test drive.

I have an 82 6.2 and I suspect they are the same. The innermost belt runs over the fan to the A/C unit and down under the power steering back to the crank. The middle belt runs over the fan to the power steering. The out side belt runs over the fan to the alternator. Hope this helps.

sounds as if you may be looking in the wrong spot. If different gearing is drastically changing the symptoms you may want to check the trans. or torque converter. sudden pop with engine rpm increase and lack of power sounds like possible band breakage in transmission or impellor breakage in torque converter.
