Align the timing marks of the crankshaft and camshaft. Note that the one mark is on a tooth, the other in a valley. The tooth and valley must align exactly. Cylinder No. 6 should be at TDC compression if everything is set properly.
What engine number do you have? This may be why your having a problem. I loaded an image that may help.

Move the tensioner all the way to the left, then tighten the bolt.

Hello Mr Varrington.
Here is a diagram to help you line the belt.
The marks on the cam pulleys and the crank pulley must line up exactly with the corresponding marks on the engine and rear covers.
Note that the one on the crank is near the bottom.I was changing the timming - 1d17ae5.gifom.

    I checked another site.
    Here is a proper diagram.
Not sure why they had shown the mark where it was on the other one.

  • FUBAR Apr 25, 2010

There is a notch at the rear of the crank pulley to line up with the mark on the engine.

Timing belt keeps jumping tim 3 times know reset runs good for awhile

You have a bad timing belt tensioner. Stop driving it because you are probably due for a new timing belt also if the tensioner is bad. If the timing belt breaks while you are driving it, serious damage may occur like a valve punching through a piston, bent valve, damaged cam, serious stuff can happen if the timing belt breaks.

remove the crankshaft, make sure that the plugs are removed ,line up the timming marks on tdc,(top dead center) remove alternator belt.remove all the plastic covers check the move ment in the water pump and the cam belt tennsioner if it has one as the water pump does the same job.

remove all old bits of the old belt.

alignment of the cam shaft(s) with a dot and arrow on them both.rebuild with a new toyota or gates belt.when all back in place turn the engine by hand ,there should be no tight spots.then fit crankpully.
