Question about 1997 Mazda Pickup

3 Answers

I have a Mazda Bravo 1997 model B2600. Am trying to put a new head on the block, although I have set the balance and timing as per the guide the motor shakes and rattles when I start it. I feel it has something to do with positioning the new head on to the existing block, Head bolts or maybe I need different guides for the timeing and balance as it is a new head and older block. The block was in good order when we rplaced the head. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is???? Tyler

the valve timing is set at 6 TDC, which is as per factory specifications, we have checked and rechecked the timing with a timing light, but the motor shakes from side to side, the head is the correct head as it sat on perfectly, the marks on the two balancer pulleys line up as well, and the head is torqued as per the factory settings

i have checked the timing (spark plugs leads and dissy cap). But it still shakes from side to side. Would it have something to do with the balancer on the front of the engine .

I have checked all those things. The head has been torqued up to the right specs and in the right sequence. Spark plugs and lead are all band new. I have put a new timing chain kit on the engine and have lined up all the marks on the block and sprockets. I have followed the workshop manual to every step.

Most likely you have your plug wires crossed- or bad ones.- Check each plug wire and be sure they are not puled out of their sockets. New is best unless you purchased new when you replaced the head.
If the plug wires are good - for 100% sure - and the distributor cap isn't cracked - and there is no oil up inside the distributor cap you will need to double check your timing chain..Before you do that pull the valve cover off and double check your valves are opening and closing properly.Pull the plugs too and be double sure they are not closed or open too much.
Chances are very good it is bad plug wires.
Again if not then triple check your other elements before pulling down the engine to check the timing belt. That can be it even if you''''''''re only one notch off.

First off when an engine shakes its because the firing is off. since you put a new head on the engine i do have to ask you if you tightend the head bolts to spec and in the order of the tightening sequence?
also check your spark plugs one by one and see if they are burning the fuel wrong, with a miss fire or an out of order fire you and get quite the engine shake. another thing if the engine is running rough and causing a shake check to make sure you got all the vaccuum hoses hooked up, this will cause you to get a lean engine code in your PCM, and a Check engine light to come on as well. Please check these things and then get back to me as we can explore further options of what might be wrong with this engine.

Hi,

You will need to make sure that the valve timing is correct. If it is even out 1 tooth it will cause the motor to do what it is doing.

If it was the incorrect head or anything was different then it wouldn't sit on the head guides which are in the block.

Just double check that the valve timing is correct.

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

Ok, check compression on each cylinder, if there are any major drops of pressure between any of them then you have a sealing problem.

Also check your HT leads and spark plugs one or more may need replacing.

If your timing with the valves and ignition is spot on then it can only be spark plugs or HT leads.

Give the ignition system a good look over.

Also check that your firing order is correct you may have a HT lead on the wrong cylinder.

If you are able to take the engine revs up to 1500 rpm does it still shake?

If it does then remove the harmonic balancer on the front and check to make sure that it is not damaged.

If it has the rubber ring, separating the grove from the inside hub check that this is ok and no parts of it are broken or missing.

If it is damaged inanyway replace it.

How did you remove the balancer?

From the bolt holes in the middle area or from the outside of it?

I've seen those nipples clog up. Try removing it and clean it out.

You can , carefully, pinch the hose while you do that.
