  • karyn Apr 27, 2010

sorry about that...the car is a 99 chevy cavalier. someone said to check the fuel pump relay, where the heck would that be found?

  • karyn Apr 27, 2010

I have a 99 chevy cavalier. It will start but after a few minutes it shuts off. All the lights on my dash are lit up(coolant,oil,anti-theft and battery lights)but the check engine light isnt on. There was a recall on the ignition is this particular car, we have had that repaired so its definitely not that. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Just take your car to any authorised repair shop. There the OBD code will be scanned which will throw the error code.
As per the error code particular part is faulty.Instead of firing in the dark it will throw light over the exact area of the problem and you can rectify the same

MOST AUTOZONE SHOPS DOES THE SCAN FOR FREE OF COST.

I feel the problem is quite something related to electrical. As all of the lights are illuminated at the same time, its always better to get the codes scanned..

Depending on the year of the car there can only be a handfull of things. If the car is 95 and newer, it almost has to be the computer, ignition switch or the ignition key switch. See the check engine light will come on if it's anything with missfires, fuel, ignition, exhaust, etc. If it's older then that well then any of those possibilties can be the cause of it and it would have to be taken in to be looked at. Oh, hint, next time please give the year, make, engine size info next time. Same cars with different motors can have two different common problems. But I don't think that is the case this time.

The oil pressure switch connects to the fuel pump sending a signal to activate the fuel pump to run. You need to replace the fuel pump relay. This relay does operate the fuel pump once the car starts up. Upon retaining proper oil pressure the computer shuts off the oil switches circuit to the fuel pump and turns on the fuel pump relay to opreate the pump till you shut the engine off

1992 2.6 mazda proceed there's a light on dash that says heat came on yesterday so left over night when started light came back on have just bought vechicle and had changed oil and filter

Are you saying temp light came on? Check radiator coolant, and if low use instructions to refill. if coolant is ok, check if hose going from top of radiator to motor is warm after running for five or ten minutes. if not shut motor off and dont drive it. You probably need to change the thermostate where the hose goes to motor. if you continue driving you may blow a headgasket. A thermostat is an easy replacement. Two bolts. just make sure you place it right side up.

Chrysler 300m oil light came on while driving and the engine then shut down. the oil light is still on the dash and the car wont start. turns over fine just dont run

Are you SURE that it was Oil Light then Engine Shut off? There is not a ENGINE SHUT OFF if the light comes on that I am aware of and I have worked on quite a few 300's.

I would be trying to start the vehicle by:
Verify Fuel Pressure
Spray Starting Fluid in the Intake and see if it starts then
Are you sure there is Spark?
CRANKSHAFT SENSOR went bad

Hi guys...my yaris is running rich, has poor gas mileage (360km on a full tank). and very slow and choppy idle (idles like a really old car) these are the things i have done so far : change air and fu

Do the following:
1. Clean the throttle body from inside.
2. Adjust the spark plugs gap to 1.00 mm.
3. Check fuel pump pressure. (44 Psi - 49 psi)
4. Remove the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes.
5. Connect the battery terminal.
6. Check the engine oil level and coolant level.
NOTE: Before starting the engine shut off all lights and loads for example room light, blower, radio, parking light etc.
7. Start the engine and hold the throttle at 3000 rpm till radiator fan comes on.
8. After the fan comes on release the throttle pedal and let it idle for 10 minutes.

1997 GMC Jimmy 4.3. It runs great. I will drive it for 30-45 min and then it will die on me. All dash lights will come on just like if you turn the key on and not start the engine. It will restart and then...

When the engine dies do the accessories such as radio, lights, heater all die along with the engine; or do they keep running as they were prior to the stall?
If they all quit together (as if the key was shut off) I would check the electrical part of the ignition switch or the battery cables and connections (check both ends of cables and little ground wire near battery that connects to car body). The ignition switches are a well known culprit in the s10's.

If the radio and lights keep running after the stall, I would look at the crank position sensor, ignition coils etc.

Good Luck!

!999 Saturn. Occasionally when I first start it, 2 dashboard lights come on in the upper right of my dash; one looks like a battery and to the left of that looks like a thermometer. It's a fairly new...

I am guessing these are the battery and oil light indicators. Check your oil level IMMEDIATELY. Make sure it's full. Your battery level may also be low; however these are normal to come on right before you start almost any car and they'll go off a few seconds after.

Indicator lights with high pitched squealing sounds.

check the alternator drive belt,it may be loose and squealing.
the alternator itself could be also making a noise.
start the car with the hood open and listen to it.
look if the belt is cracked, loose or wet from oil or water etc.
things like thermostat housings leaking coolant can cause something like that.
