After you have it running for about 15 minutes, look underneath the car, just under and behind the engine, also under the hood at the exhaust manifold. If any of these are glowing red, this is your issue and replace the catalytic converter or pre cat(precat you can see under the hood). The fuel is filter is likely also. If this has not been replaced in the last 15,000 miles it should be done anyways. Let me know what you find.

Why did it overheat going uphill?

You are probably low on coolant. The engine has to work a little harder going uphill.

1998 Chevrolet C3500 dies randomly when driving down the road - uphill, downhill or flat surfaces. Typically doesn't happen when it's cold. Sometimes it starts back up and sometimes it doesn't....

U have an intermittent electrical connection causing the hassle. Check and clean all wiring junctions, etc. Also work the connections by sliding them in and out many times to remove any oxidation. U have to remember that a car's electrical system is low voltage and the slightest bit of corrosion can screw things up - example is dirty battery terminal wires with a new battery. Car will not crank but clean the terminals and away you go!!!!!!!!!!!!

my younger brothers' truck did the same thing and there was a relay up under the dashboard that would get hot and shut of(kind of a circuit breaker unit) most of the operating systems will flash at you when only battery voltage is available which explains the lights coming on..these newer trucks also have a performance chip in the system that will act up when it gets warm also..replace this and you may be ok..let me know what happens also.. good luck.

My 2003 2.7l Grand Cherokee doesn't like cold starts, especially running up hill. It seems not to want to rev above 2000 rpm and is very sluggish. Is it a problem?

Check transmission fluid level and/or replace. Lower fluid level allows fluid to warm up sooner. (Check with qualified mechanic first)
Or it may just be one of those vehicles that takes longer to warm up.

Check engine light is flashing and it doesn't want to accellerate easily, has trouble uphill. then last night, the locking fuel cap broke because my friend didn't know to push in and twist to unlock.

When the cel flashes continuously that means there is a problem that needs checked out right away. As for the fuel cap. The best thing to do is break off the outer cover then you can get to the part that connects to the fill pipe and turn it out.
