From the OnStar site:

Q1. What different types of equipment do OnStar-equipped vehicles have?
A1. All OnStar-equipped vehicles have one of three types of equipment:

Analog-Only: OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog-only equipment were designed to operate only on the analog wireless network and cannot be upgraded for digital network compatibility. Vehicles with this equipment will no longer be able to receive OnStar services beginning January 1, 2008. At that time, service will be available only through dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment. Analog-only vehicles cannot be upgraded to digital equipment.

Analog/Digital-Ready: OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog/digital-ready equipment operate on the analog wireless network, but were designed to be upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment when available for that vehicle. Beginning January 1, 2008, OnStar service will not be available on these vehicles unless the OnStar equipment has been upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment.

Dual-Mode (Analog/Digital): OnStar-equipped vehicles with dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment operate on both the analog and digital wireless networks and will not require an upgrade in connection with the wireless industry's transition to the digital network.

Q2. What kind of hardware does my OnStar-equipped vehicle have?
A2. To determine the equipment type in an OnStar-equipped vehicle, you may:

1. Press the blue OnStar button in the vehicle and ask the OnStar Advisor to identify which equipment type was factory-installed in the vehicle.
2. Call OnStar toll-free at 1.888.206.0031, or to contact us online, click here. (Please have your OnStar account number or your vehicle identification number (VIN) available.)

Hope this helped.

I believe that you would need to change the antenna, control panel and vcim.
    Go to onstar.com
like here there is alot of information on onstars.

As far as what's physically involved in the swap, it's two things:

    1) A digital VCIM (OnStar module)

    2) A new antenna that will support digital cellular. I suspect the old
window mount job you currently have would work, but it is *designed* for
    analog

    Your options:

    1) Wait around and see if/when your vehicle will be officially
elligible for the OnStar upgrade. You can go to http://www.onstarenrollment.com
and check your VIN. If and when it IS elligible (in other words, they
know what they are doing and have a kit for your vehicle) the plan is
still kind of a ripoff, because they make you purchase THREE YEARS of
Safe & Sound in order to get the "free" equipment upgrade. That's
    $600 bucks.

    2) Take it upon yourself to buy a used 02+ digital VCIM from a used auto
    parts place (see http://www.onstar.com/us_english/jsp/adt...
for help there) and buy a new or used roof mount antenna/cables and do
the swap yourself. If you care enough to do this, and are handy with
some basic tools you should be able to upgrade on your own for roughly
    $150 if you shop around.

    Good luck.

Hello. The only way to upgrade it is to replace the analog unit with a digital unit. This will be a costly upgrade so be prepared. Your dealership can do this upgrade but do get a firm price before agreeing to it and also call a few auto electric shops, stereo shops, etc. Joe

Can't activate onstar in the vehicle by the blue button on a 2004 envoy

Is the LED on the right side of the mirror green or red? If it's red, or not illuminated at all, there is a problem in the onstar system that needs to be diagnosed with a scan tool. Also- that model may also still have the analog onstar system. GM had an upgrade program that ran for a few years that allowed you to upgrade your onstar to digital hardware. If you're still running the analog onstar hardware, it's not going to work. Again, going to a reputable dealer would be the best way to find out what's going on.

FUSE FOR CIGARETTE LIGHTERS AND LOCATION IN CAR

From 2003-Buick-Rendezvous-Owners-Manual , this is Fuse 32 under the hood in the fuse box, the same fuse that controls the lighters is the same one that powers the OBDII system, and Onstar as well.

I hope that info helps someone else (remember comment and rated this).

How do i remove my present onstar system and replace it with a digital system? Also whete is my current onstar system peices located st so i can remove them? 2002 buick rendezvous cx.

The Vehicle interface unit VIU and the Vehicle control unit VCU and the receiver is located behind the glove box in the passenger footwell. the onstar button is located int he overhead console. the modules are vin specific so they cant be swapped out without GM. you can remove them I have a 02 and since its no longer supported by onstar i yanked out the VIU and VCU and the cell phone receiver. then took the GPS transponder off the front driver side of the windshield and the rear attenna off the back glass and got an overhead console minus onstar and put it up. They unplug and cause no problems The fuse is fuse 32. The actual guts of the Onstar system is in the frontmost overhead compartment that is between the driver and passenger seats. However, if the option wasn't purchased you'll just have an extra slot for sunglasses.
