Rear driver wheel locks up and abs light comes on

I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana.NOT AWD The rear driver wheel has made some clunk noises. Check engine light is on, and then the rear passenger wheel is now locking up, and ABS light will come on sometimes. Putting it into reverse and firmly applying brakes seems to be a quick short term fix, but wheel will solidly lock up again, causing the tire to squeal and immobilize vehicle. Please help. I am a diy, so i can understand technical terms or instructions.

I found the problem. I removed the drum to inspect for any "obvious" issues. When I pulled the drum off, a HUGE chunk of the brake pad, measuring 1 inch by 4 inches fell right out. It SOMEHOW came off from the mounting metal, and the pad material obviously was moving inside and jamming up. I remember now that sometimes it would slowly catch and then firmly lock up. At least it was pad material that was lodged in there. So I replaced both sides and had a friend help bleed both brake circuits. I'm thinking faulty pad caused that???

I also closely inspected the drum for abnormal wear. None.

You may have a bad ABS module but you may need further diagnostics to confirm this

I would check 2 things. 1) Make sure your emergency brake is not locking up(they get rusty) If it is this free it up and don't use your emergency brake again; 2) If you changed your rear brakes recently, the brake adjuster shouldn't be adjusted manually. You have self adjusting rear brakes that will automatically adjust everytime you back up. This happened to me with another car I had. Once the rear brake heated up it would lock the wheel. Would have to wait until brake cooled off before wheel would turn again.

How do i get info on any recalls on my 2004 pont aztec & how do i get in contact with somebody about anti-lock & awd problems

Hi! Matt, Most likely if the anti-lock brake light and the awd disable light come on at the same time a wheel bearing / wheel speed sensor assembly is faulty.Listen for a humming noise when driving and try to determine where it is coming from(left/right/front/ back) or any looseness/play in any wheel. That's the possible bearing/wheel speed sensor causing the problem. Or have the abs system scanned to determine which wheel sensor is reading incorrectly. If the awd disable light is off then the awd system should be funtioning.

Clunking and whinning when locked in awd

check the cv joints for wear. check rear drive shaft for worn slip joint splines and "u" joint wear. When you lock in awd there is no centre diff to allow the variations between the wheels and so you are experiencing a torque build up between the front and rear diffs . This put stress on the entire drive chain so any looseness or worn parts will display noises. Remember that the awd lock should be only used on surfaces that allow the tyres to slip and relieve the stress ( dirt road---snow---mud--ice )

I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana. When i go throw water my abs light comes on and stays on untill i turn off the van. I let it sit a few mins when i turn the van back on the light is off. Do you think that...

There are 3 connectors for the abs system on the front that can get water into them if the seal is missing. 2 of them are at the wheels, the 3rd is on the frame behind the drivers side wheel. Check them and make sure the rubber seal is in tact. I doubt that it would be on the rear. But there are 2 connectors in front of the rear wheels there also.

The AWD disabled light keeps going off & on periodiacally while I am driving and the brakes sometimes want to pump up...what is causing this ?

Rear wheel hub(s) will cause the AWD light to come on and sometimes off. After awhile that light will just stay on until you get the rear wheel hub replaced. You can either have a dealer do it for approx $500.00 or you can get the part at AutoZone for $129.00 and do it yourself. This will turn off the AWD light and also quiet the rear noise you hear.

2000 Pontiac Montana Making a Loud Vibrating Noise in Back End

If you have a front wheel drive and not a AWD montana, it could be a bad wheel bearing or a brake shoe that may have broken loose.
Most likely it's going to be a bad rear wheel bearing and it takes less then 2 hours to replace. You can pick up the wheel bearing at Auto Zone or Parts Source for around $170.00 and they have all the instructions for you to do thew job your self if you like.
Tool's you will need: Jack Stand Ratchet with a 1/2 socket and extention Large screw driver 5 pound hammer Lock tight
To check if it is your bearing, try shaking the van from Side to side from the wheel. Listen and feel for any play, the bearing it self is sealed and the bearing my have gone dry.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh you do not have to remove the brakes to do this job and use the screw driver from the top to split the bearing from the brake housing after you hammer it free from the Axle.

ABS light is on and no traction light is on. I have a Pontiac Grand Prix 2001 gt. Light stays on always. I don't feel a problem with the brakes.

Check around all wheels to make sure the wires going to the wheel are intact and plugged in tightly. I had the same thing on my 2000 G.P. GT, in my case it was just a broken wire to one of the wheels.
