Question about 1983 Jeep CJ7

1978 IH Scout II park brake won't work. It will not engage in neutral, reverse, or drive. We're able to get it to stay down on the floor, but it's as if no brakes are on at all. (Sorry to put it under a Jeep CJ7, but there was no category for International Harvester. So, I went with the closest.)

Need to adjust and or adjust/replace rear brakes as to the adjustment under truck follow cable to adjustment usually around drivers side adjust as necessary

So.... either the cable is broken, or the parking brake mechanism is missing, broken, rusted? You should be able to crawl under and watch the cables being pulled as somone works the parking brake lever. If they work ok, then its time to pull the wheels off and ck the brakes.

Hello, Forgive me if this does not work for you. Sometimes the simple things are overlooked. If you have an automatic transmission, make sure it is in Park. You can also try to start it in Neutral or Drive or Reverse. Make sure you have your foot on the brake and parking brake set. If it starts in any position other than Park or neutral, you might need a new neutral safety switch. If you have a manual transmission, make sure to push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor to activate the safety switch.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park


This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

Bought a 1990 Bronco II from one of my troops and somehow he drove it over here. It's a manual transmission as well. But once I put it in first gear, it feels like something is stopping it going forward....


It sounds like you may have a brake caliper sticking (if the issue is really coming from the front). Does it pull in one direction? One way to check is to jack the front end up and try to spin each tire by hand. They should turn relatively freely. Another possibility, and more likely from your description, is that the rear emergency / parking brake may be frozen. Drum brakes, by nature, do a better job of holding the vehicle from rolling forward. If your emergency / parking brake is engaged, either frozen or inadvertently left on, I would expect the symptoms you describe- moving in reverse, but not forward. You can check this the same way- jack up the rear end of the vehicle, put it in neutral, and try spinning the rear tires by hand.

Assuming your vehicle is a 4x4, a less likely scenario is that something's gone awry in the transfer case, front differential, axles, hubs.

I was stopped with the car in neutral and selected 4wd hw the 4x4 light is on but did not hear it engage and now I cannot get the 4x4 light to go off....tried many different combos of brake, neutral etc.


Do you have the extra shift lever on the floor or the "shift on the fly" electric selector? My 1999 only needs to be put in Neutral(with brake pedal pressed) for the Low range and the shift from 2wheel drive to 4wheel high is seamless with the Electric selector.

You might try putting the truck in reverse for a couple of feet, then to Park, and back to Neutral or Drive. Then use the Electric selector. Your year model may require a foot on the brake.

Ford has a style of selector that uses 1 wire to the Shift servo for all the drive ranges. There are resistors in the selector switch with each position making a different voltage. If the LED backlit bulb in the selector is dirty, it can throw off the voltage. I understand that the best access to the selector switch is through the opening for the radio. Once the radio is removed there are 2, 1/4inch screws holding the selector to the dash.

You can replace the selector or attempt to clean it as access is possible by removing 3 clips on the part. This made the LED changeable by providing access. There is a spring and checkball which makes the selector click into place and stay where you put it.

You can also try to clean the connections on the plugin for the selector with Electronics spray. Thats all you may need if you can jockey around the spray can to squirt the terminals on the selector switch.

With luck, my opening instructions may solve your problem. It is possible your mechanical shift linkage for the Park,Reverse,Neutral,Drive has too much play in it and an interlock is just not lining up. If you have another type of 4x4 with the extra lever on the floor there are different instructions.

How do i put my 4x4 on my 95 yukon......on park or neutral. and do i have to put my foot on the brake?


You can shift between 2Hi and 4Hi when the truck is moving. Just let off the gas and shift it. But in order to shift to Neutral or 4Lo you need to stop the truck and shift the transmission into neutral then shift the transfer case.

Brake lights stay on in drive or reverse. If I shift to park or neutral brake lights go off.


Interestingly, the brake lights on the Aura don't work when the car is in park or neutral. This is the way that it's designed. The likely culprit is the brake switch located on the arm of the brake pedal. You can replace this cheaply.

98 Chevy K1500, four wheel drive floor shifter won't engage.


I had the same problem with my 98 z71, I put the floor shifter in neutral, and let the truck roll backwards a little bit, BE CAREFUL, with the floor shifter in neutral the truck will roll, regardless if the shifter on the steering column is in Park, use caution, make sure there is no one around your truck and you are inside of it and out of the path of doors and tires,

Emergency brake pedal will not stay down when i press it.


The parking brake actuator (the mechanism you press with your foot) works like a ratchet wrench. The pedal has a cresent shaped plate with teeth on it. It pivots on a mounting plate. There is a pawl with a small spring also on the backing plate. This pawl engages the teeth on the pedal assembly to hold the brake engaged (against the large return spring).
Stick your head under the dash and look carefully at the parking brake actuator mechanism. See why the pawl is not engaging the teeth on the pedal assembly. Most likely causes are that the release mechanism is jammed "on" or that the light spring which attaches to the pawl is missing (usually from being kicked by some one with large feet) View this mechanism on another GM vehicle with the same style parking brake if you suspect that parts are missing.
