Question about 1987 Ford Merkur Scorpio

1 Answer

I have a Ford Scorpio, that is a 2 litre DOHC, EFi, 5 door saloon, it broke down just before christmas, and I was told that I need a new ''ignition module'' I checked the Haynes manual to see what this entailed to replace it, to find that the distributor has this fitted to the side of it, however my distributor is attached to the engine block directly, and is driven by the camshaft, where on earth is the ignition module on a car with an engine management system ?, because this does not match the pictures anywhere in the haynes manuals. and where do I get ''heat sink conmpound'' to refit it, because nowhere on the internet, is this found ? P.S. How do I find out what the serial number of the proper unit is, for an igniton module anyway, if it can not be seen ?

The module is the Gray plugin part that receives the wires going into the Distributor. There are 2 screws which may need a Special Screwdriver to fit the screws and to give clearance to remove the part.

Usually the module comes with a Plastic packet of the "heat sink compound" with barely enough to do the job.

The part number is usually molded in the plastic or may be etched on the metal face where it meets the distributor. Until you remove the module you will not see the part.number.

The screwdriver you need used to be everywhere in the days cars had this type of module. I believe Lyle or Leslie were 2 aftermarket makers of this tool.

Try an internet search for "ignition module tool or screwdriver". Then search for "Ford Scorpio ignition module" for the part. There were not many engine choices for that car. Also look on the drivers door or center pillar for an Emissions code. This code is the onboard computers Programming pattern. The module may be married to the computer and it may be possible to reference the matching module through this Progamming pattern code.

Try a separate earth wire from the coil to the body any where will do. if yoy have a wire with aligator clips on eather end for a test. Do you have power to the rest of the car. Look at the battery conections espicialy earth, won't heart to give them a clean.if not a mobile auto sparky will sort it in a jiffy.

I have purchased a 2004 1.8 tdci ford focus,I need a spare key!

go on ebay to by the key and then get it cut at like target or walmart...

once you get the new key...

1-insert and remove key from ignition two times

2-close and open driver door two times

3-insert and remove key once from ign.

4-close and open drvr door twice

5-insert key into ign.,then close driver door

6-turn key to on (not start) then off, twice this is rewrite mode

7-remove key from ignition, the door locks should cycle twice.if not start may take a few tries.

8-press lock/unlock together and hold for a second

9-release,and press lock on remote, the door locks will cycle confirming program.continue to do other remotes you have, steps 8 and 9.if only one in possession, you are done. To end mode open door or insert key into ignition.

You'll need to follow the steps with no more than a 1-2 second delay between each step.. hope it works
