Question about 1987 Nissan Maxima

2 Answers

My power steering on my 87 Maxima just went out this morning. It made a loud screeching noise and actually caused the car to shut down. Had to try 5 times to get car to turn back on (which is unusual). The power steering fluid was really low so I put in power steering fluid. The car runs fine...except I don't have power steering...no screeching, no whining, no abonormal noise - it's just suddenly as if the car never had power steering. Any thoughts?

Possible problem associate with power steering pump or low oil in the system.

Whever you don't have enough power steering oil in the system then you get that whining noise. But if you have topped up oil and it has not solved your problem and on top of that the steering wheel is hard to steer, then you have a problem with the power steering pump which is not functioning here.I hope this gives you a better idea than what I explained earlier.Good luck with it.

Timhda,

You may need a new powersteering pump. However, make sure the belt is still there. A car will run, but this belt may very well power other componenets. Check that the belt is on, and tight.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance with this matter.

Cordially,

Hi, it sounds more like you have a improperly tensioned drive belt. If you didn't get all the trapped air out of the power steering system this maybe the cause of your stiffer steering problem now. Try loosening the P/S belt all the way and starting the car if you still hear the noise you know its in one of the other drive belts. good luck

Screeching noise

If your C/V joint is going bad it will make a nasty clicking sound and get louder the longer you leave it unattended. If this noise went away it could have been something stuck it the moving area of your wheel and just worked itself out.Keep an ear out for the noise to return,it it dosen't come back be happy.

98 gs300 loud screeching noise that last for about 5-10 seconds

The only four rotating items under the hood are
engine
power steering pump
A/C compressor
and smog emission pump.
==== I would check the fluid level on the power steering first. Check for pink fluid leak on the ground,
==== Check the A/C system with the wheel turn to one side and APPLY ALL LOADS.
Example: high beam on,A/C max, radio on and deforster on.
This will give you system a stress test.
All eyes on the pully and locate to part that generate the loud screeching noise.
My bet is on the power steering pump.

Please post more info on the comment window.
I will follow up on it.
