Driver power window operation

The driver window and the one behind don't work while the two on the passenger side work fine. The power switch and motor are ok - where else do I need to look?

    Thanks for your reponse.
Here is how did I go about testing :
1- I went and purchased another switch and plug it , and I got the same function ( passenager windows open and driver side woindows don't)
2- I did the same with a new motor and I had the same.
the old and new motors gears did not spin, and every time I push the dirver window button to open, I only hear the Relay clicking....
However the auto part store tested my old motor(by connecting to 12 V battery, the gear did spin, so I instattled back , thinking it might work but no luck again.
would it be a fuse or a relay, or other thing in the fuse or distributor boxes that is going bad?

    Hello:
I checked voltage of all wiring to the switch for wach window ( up and down position) , I got 12 volt on each. I must mention that while I am testing the switch buttons, I only hear the relay cliking while I push dirver window button in the down poistion. I did not hear any clicking for the up position , neither up or down position for the the rear left window. Is this normal?
I also took the dirver motor out and tested with a battery, it was okay.
    any more thoughts?
Do I still need to check wires by the door jam- it looked fine from outside.

looking for pinched wire or check the resistance? would a break in these wire, would that cause disfunctional driver window?

  • mlatif777 Apr 30, 2010

Thank you. No I don't any alarms nor any remotes. I will check the relay.
I have tested the power plug ( wires going to the motor)for voltage while I have the igention on, but did not get no reading on one side and only .5 voltage from the second. is this normal? I placed the red voltimeter to the plug and the black to the car gorund. is this a vailed test? could I have a disconnect in the power going to the motor?

how did you go about testing the switch/motor?

  • mlatif777 May 16, 2010

OK- that was good trouble shootingtips. here is what I found:
1- motor was out of place on the rare door, so I re-installed and it is working for last 2 days.
2- the dirver window still not working. after tesing and testing ( motor is good- worked on the the rare door when I tested, switch is geeting pluse BUT when I checked voltage to plug ( after disconnecting from motor)the meter read 12 V when I press up ( white), and testing the other wire ( red) when pressing down, I did not get reading Would that be a wire pinch or relay? if the main switch runs all other 3 windows, would that elimintae the relay as being the problemm?

I would go through and check all fuses and relays, i have seen strange things like this happening before. Though, if you can hear the relay and the motor is in working order then chances are the fuses are good. I would also check the door jam where the harness goes through, make sure nothing is pinched or worn through. The way i would diagnose the problem: with the door panels removed and the switches hooked up, toggle the switches for the front and rear door to see if the motors are trying to turn and its not window gears that are jammed. then i would unplug the switch to test the leads to make sure its getting power. then, test the output for the switch to make sure its sending power. then got to the motor and test to see if it is receiving the pulse. also, unplug the connectors and clean all the leads and apply some dialectic grease corrosion can cause this issue...

I see your point, the only reason i suggested checking that was to eliminate the slight chance of one of the wires leading to the back grounding out and feeding back into the switch immobilizing both windows. Bad relays could definitely cause the windows to stop working, and whether or not u hear them clicking does not guarantee they are working (seen this before). the only way to be sure is test the relay. You can either pull it out and bench test it or probe it while it is plugged in to see if its sending power. Just out of curiosity, you wouldn't happen to have a aftermarket alarm/remote start do you?

2008 Colorado passenger window will go up and down with drivers control switch, but not using passenger side switch. Replaced switch on passenger side with no changes...

Lockout Switch Feature
The window lockout switch, when closed, provides power to the passenger door switches enabling normal window operation and when the lockout switch is open, power is cut to the passenger door switches disabling window operation. Normal window operation is still available from the driver master control.

Before you replace anything, inspect the connector pins in both the driver's door switch and the passenger door switch. If you don't find any problem with these connector pins, replace the driver's door control switch.

2004 Toyota tundra passenger power window switch not operational

Try a passenger side door switch or a new complete master switch on drivers door. Alaways check fuses also.

Passenger side power window will not go up or down when weather is hot (+100 F) . Works fine once temp drops. All other windows work fine all the time.

Hello, You need to determine if this is a switch or motor problem. If you are using the Drivers' controls for the Passengers window, try using the Passengers window control on the Passengers door. If one switch works and the other does not, then replace the bad switch.

If neither works you have to check the wiring in the door at the connector to the motor for power. You need a test light or a Voltmeter and check the power going to the Window motor by using the connector plug. Then push your window switch and see if there is power. If you have power, then it only leaves the Window motor to be the problem. Jump the connector from the motor side and see if the Window motor operates.

If you are handy, the solder on the Window motor can be bad and you only need to resolder it. If you go to replace the Window motor, be aware that the right and left sides are different. The door panels have 1 or 2 hidden screws behind trim plugs on the door handle and the speaker grille.

The temperature difference can spread a crack in a piece of Solder and this is most likely why you have a problem. I hope my solution is helpful.

Window problem

Might want to check the doors with the problem windows for a broken wire from the door to the door jam.

The window lock switch is a single circuit to all the other windows, so if there was a problem with it, none of the window controls would work ( but the driver's side would still operate them ).

The other place to check for a broken wire is the driver's side door to a-pillar harness. The circuits for the other windows run through the driver's side switch. Could be a wire in the driver's side door harness.

The other item could be the driver's side switch, the contacts will get carbon built up on them, and the windows will not operate anymore.
This is what mine looked like when the driver's side window stopped working ( lower left hand corner of the picture is the driver's side window switch, note the carbon build up on the contacts )

I would start with checking for broken wires, by metering the window switch for power.

The back passenger's window switch should be getting power & ground on the white w/ yellow stripe wire and the tan w/ light blue stripe wire.
in the "at rest" position on the driver's side switch, these are supplying ground to the power window, and power is being applied to the other side of the motor ( depending on direction of travel ).

I wouls suspect you have either a inoperative window regulator (the frame work for the power glass) or a bad power window motor. More often then not the are sold as a single assembly and are not very hard to replace on this vehice.
