Why does my steering wheel keep locking up and not allowing me to start the van even if the wheel was not turned when the engine is turned off?

Probably a worn ignition lock cylinder.

Sometimes the mechanical system that locks your steering wheel has too much vehicle weight which can prevent the key from turning. If you can move the vehicle back and forth while someone turn the steering wheel and turn the ignition switch.

05 accord makes a whinning noise when i accelarate gets louder then stops when i am stopped


Sounds like low power steering fluid or air in the steering system.To fill up and get the air out faster,it's easier to elevate the front wheels.Fill up the resevoir,and turn the wheel full left,wait 30 seconds,then turn slowly to the right,wait 30 seconds,repeat(and keep an eye on the fluid level)(note:do these lock to lock turns with the engine off-this allows air bubbles to rise up in the resevoir and dissipate,instead of churning through the lines and steering rack)

Christian; I'll take a few pot shots at your problem. Your front struts have bearings at the top which allow the front to turn smoothly rather than your springs crackling and going bump, bump.
With an assistant, Open the hood, and to the left and right are the strut towers, easily identifiable because they are just above the wheels. Have your friend start the van "KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT! Have your assistant turn the steering wheel full left lock and full right lock. without the vehicle in motion or in gear. Ideally, you want it on a paved surface. Chances are that is the source of the noise. Good luck.

When i put the key in the ignition it will not turn to start the engine.


Do you have the steerring wheel locked? If so, turn the steering wheel to the direction it is locked. This will take pressure off the locking mechanism, and allow you to turn the key.

Turn the wheel slightly towards the direction you last turned it in and hold it there. This will remove the friction against the key lock, allowing you to turn the key and unlock the steering coulomb.

The steering coulomb lock is a safety feature that keeps criminals from driving off with your car in the event that they hotwire it. It locks the wheel slightly to the left or right, so they will only go in circles.

After I replaced the power steering pump and reservoir on my 2002 Jeep, I still get air in the system. Where could it be coming from?


Your problem could be a pressure side hose that has a rupture that only leaks in extreme conditions. Inspect to replace with new to repair problem. First make sure you have removed the pump caps off of the hose fittings. If ok, it appears you may have a stuck valve in the rack assembly. Replacing the rack should solve your problem. ------- The new pump should be self-bleeding by turning the wheels left and right. Let sit over night to release air bubbles, recheck fluid level.------ Check the tension of the drive belts on the pump, as they may be loose. The power steering pump and reservoir is located on the front of the engine driven by one of the fan belts. There is a removable cap on the top with a dipstick attached. With the engine off, fill this up to the full mark with power steering fluid. Replace the cap, start the engine and check for leaks. On the back of the pump are two hoses either one could be leaking. REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Wipe the power steering cap and area free of dirt. Remove the power steering cap.

2. Use a siphon pump to remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.

3. With a helper in the vehicle, raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

WARNING :POWER STEERING FLUID, ENGINE PARTS, AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY BE EXTREMELY HOT IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RUNNING. DO NOT START ENGINE WITH ANY LOOSE OR DISCONNECTED HOSES. DO NOT ALLOW HOSES OR POWER STEERING FLUID TO TOUCH HOT EXHAUST MANI FOLD OR CATALYST.
4. Locate the power steering cooler attached to the crossmember support plate. Slide back the clamp and disconnect one of the two power steering return hoses at the power steering oil cooler and drain fluid in an appropriate container.
5. Have the helper turn the steering wheel back and forth quickly several times to force as much fluid as possible from the steering gear.
6. Reconnect the hose at the oil cooler using the original clamp.
7. Lower vehicle so the vehicle tires are not contacting the ground.
9. For proper fluid fill and bleeding air from the power steering system:

a. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range using Mopar power steering fluid (ATF+4) p/n 05013458AA.

b. With the engine OFF and the vehicles tires off the ground, slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth (lock to lock) slowly 20 times to force fluid into the steering gear.

c. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range.

d. Start engine and let run for a few seconds, then turn oft engine.

e. Check fluid level and add if necessary.

f. Start engine, and slowly turn the steering wheel lightly contacting the left and right stops.

g. Stop the engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

h. Lower vehicle, start engine and slowly turn steering wheel lock-to-lock.

I. Stop engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

j. If fluid is extremely foamy, allow vehicle to stabilize a few minutes, then repeat steps "i" and "j" until the fluid level remains constant after running the engine and turning the steering wheel from lock to lock.

10. Inform the vehicle owner/operator that a steering vibration may be noted for a few hundred miles until the air is completely removed from the steering system.

The key will turn far enough to start the accessories but will not move far enough to turn the engine on.


try turning steering wheel a bit, or move shifter up past park. Otherwise ignition may have a broken or stuck pin and will need to be replaced.

Steering wheel lock stuck, key won't turn


Dude, just take a rubber mallet and hit the key moderately. This will fix the problem. I had the same thing go wrong with my van.

Starts if you turn steering wheel


I will take a guess at this. You can't turn the key until you turn the steering wheel a little to the left or the right? This is usually caused by friction on the steering locking mechanism which keeps the key from turning in order to start the car. If this is not the case then you may have a bad ignition switch or cable head connecting to the switch that is not making contact until you move the steering wheel around and it makes contact allowing you to start the vehicle.
