Question about Ford Taurus

Apr 24, 2010 - I am pretty sure that it was coolant it was a lot of fluid i believe the engine may have overheated and when i put coolant into the holding tank within minutes it is bone dry again, how do i figure out exactly what the problem is whether it is a blow head gasket, or cracked motor block? It is the only vehicle i have and i really need to fix the problem if i can. Can u tell me how much this could cost me to fix it? Apr 24, 2010 - There isn't anyway that something could be blocked somewhere forcing the coolant into the muffler or the only way that the coolant could get to the muffler is by a blown head gasket or cracked motor block?

check to see if the cooling fans at the rad are working. if so then change the thermostat and refill the system. if not then have the head gasket checked for cracking. make sure the coolant is circulating if its not it could be a plugged cooling system or even a water pump impeller problem.

I was stuck in the snow in my 2004 bmw 645 i turned off the dtc so i could have more traction after 10 minutes of back and forth i got free of the ice the i noticed smoke under my hood and coolant loss...


You likely overheated the engine/transmission to the point of a coolant boil over. 10 minutes of struggling like that can cause a lot of problems. I burned a belt off of my work truck because of all of the strain I put on the motor when I was in a similar situation. Replace the lost coolant if it registers in the overflow tank, make sure you still have all of your belts and keep an eye on the temperature gauge for a couple of days and keep an eye out for any more coolant under the vehicle. Likely the damage is localized to just a loss of coolant from boiling over. However, I'd suggest in the future that if you are stuck like that again, give the transmission a chance to cool down. You may want to consider having the transmission fluid serviced if it smells burnt at all, you may have used up some of the service life of the fluid by overheating it ( and heat kills transmissions! )

1. Check the coolant level if you have not already.

2. The most likely cause is a stuck thermostat so that when the engine is getting up to operating temp the thermostat is not opening at all - or enough - for the coolant to flow freely between the radiator and the engine to cool the heated fluid. If you check the radiator after driving and find it is cold it is a sure sign that the heated coolant that is circulating through the engine at operating temp and higher is not getting to the radiator. The first thing I would do is to change the thermostat and re-check. At the same time completely flush the coolant and replace it with new fluid of the correct spec.

The radiator fans are not going to operate when the fluid in the radiator is cold because the hot fluid cannot flow through from the engine. The fans have a temperature sensor switch.

3. If that does not solve the problem I would suspect the water pump has corroded and needs to be replaced. However from the symptoms you have described I believe a new thermo will fix the problem.

4. Don't drive the car when it is overheating. This is a certain way to blow the head gasket and potentially crack or warp the cylinder head. (In a worst case you can crack the engine block.) It will be nice and expensive to repair if you blow a head gasket or damage the cylinder head.

Expedition overheated this morning. Haven't been driven and sat out in cold weather. Could this damage my engine? Running pretty bad right now.

My car overheated and leaked coolant everywhere once i shut it off.. i just got my water pump replaced back in april i believe so i'm pretty sure it's not that should i just flush the old coolant out and...


Did you have the thermostat replaced when they did the water pump, as this might be stuck closed and preventing circulation of the water and overheating.....

To check, top the system back up with just water, and run until hot. Switch engine off and feel both radiator hoses, they should be the same temperature, if one is hot and the other cold/lukewarm, the thermostat is stuck closed or partially open.

Hi, overheating can be caused by a number of things, but it depends on the situation, if there a greed fluid (coolant) dripping under your car than you are losing the coolant which keeps your engine from overheating, if there are no signs of leaking, than you might have a bad thermostat which is either not opening, or opening at too high of a temperature. If this is so, than i recommend replacing the thermostat. (make sure to use the same temperature rated thermostat as the one that is currently in the vehicle) also when you put new coolant back in the engine, make sure that it is a 50/50 blend of coolant and water, because a too rich mixture of coolant can also cause overheating.
Check the following after the usual fluid and belt condition/tension checks: 1. Fan clutch may have died, or be dying. It is filled with a silicon oil and should lock or get very stiff when the engine is hot. After warm-up, turn off the engine. If the fan spins a bit clutch is bad. If it doesn't severely resist turning by hand it is likely bad. If it has over 100k on it it is likely time to replace it. If the electric fan runs often under normal conditions it is bad. Hayes makes a good replacement. When I changed mine I increased miliage by 1.2 mpg because at cold start it takes a while to distribute the oil inside the clutch, and a new one does that better and faster. BTW - That is why the engine roars so much when first started and shortly gets quiet. 2. If overheating under heavy load shift out of overdrive, or downshift as operators manual instructs, and slow down some. Use the tachometer to avoid running at too low or too high an RPM. Turn off air-conditioner under heavy hot loading. 3. Keep the fins on the front of the radiator free of debris like bugs and dirt. CAREFULLY straighten severely bent fins to promote airflow. 4. If you find yourself in an overheating situation and are pretty sure that it isn't a severe mechanical fault, then try turning on the heater(s) with all of the windows open. The heater cores are small radiators, and more fluid is now running through the system. Of course, the air-conditioner is off already. This trick got my wife and 12 year old son safely to Mammoth up a steep grade - he thought of it! 5. If this condition continues after these issues resolved there is likely a mechanical fault that needs a professional mechanic- like water pump, clogged radiator, failing hoses (hard to tell how bad they are inside of the hose!), head gasket leak, timing, spark plugs, or other such fault with emissions systems (although these will likely give a "check engine" warning), and poor fuel.

Brake noise check led to > low oil > overheating


I do believe it is odd,that it does this right after the front brakes have been replaced,Make sure the calipers,are not holding the front wheels,so they do not move,if they are,then the vehicle will have a hard time moving,and put a strain on the engine,therefore causing the overheating.I do not think he did anything to it to cause the problem,the oil loss,could just be from oil burning,in a long period of time,of course the oil loss,can cause the engine to overheat too,along with other things.

you put transmission fluid in your radiator? You should have antifreeze in your radiator. You could have a bad thermostat that's causing the car to over heat. Does your temp gauge read a high temperature?

What is overheating ? Engine or tranny? You said you put tranny fluid in, but not in the engine right? Engine sounds like it is toast. Is there any abnormal look to the engine oil on the dipstick? Are you losing coolant?
If you add coolant with engine NOT hot, and watch the radiator fill spout with engine started and warming up, do you see water gurgling?
Do a compression test.

Car's overheating


Check to see if your radiator fans are working. If you have A/C just turn it on and both fans WILL come on unless there is a problem ie: bad fuse(s), relay(s), or motor(s). I don't mean to scare you, but, someone "could" have a pretty bad head gasket leak and still not see fluid come out of the exhaust. If the fans are both working, it could be any number of things from, a faulty coolant temp sensor, a faulty dash gauge, possible air bubble in the cooling system. Another easy check is coolant consumption, if you are leaking coolant into the cylinder while engine is running and/or into the crank case. Just check to see if your coolant level is going down and/or your oil level isn't growing because of coolant filling up your crank case. Hope this info helps...(subytech)...
