Your car is overheating...when your car is cool, check level of radiator should be up to the top. Start car and let idle till it gets hot, put hand on upper radiator hose..it should be hot, if its not, your thermostat is stuck closed and this could lead to "head gasket damage" if left in this condition. when you select the heater position.. "this is the correct thing to do in any car that is overheating".. because it takes the water from that system and dumps it into the engine coolant system and helps to cool it down a little bit. So remember when your overheating turn on the heater system till you can pull off the road and get the coolant system checked. can i get a very helpful.

Fix truck heater


Is the temperature gauge reading about 210 degrees? If the temp is low, the thermostat may be stuck open and not allowing sufficient heat. Also check the heater hoses to see if they are hot to the touch. If one feels hot and the other is cold or only warm, heater core is becoming clogged.

What causes hyundai Elantra 2002 tempature gauge fluctuates between normal and hot


The thermostat "seals" the cool coolant giving up (rejecting) heat in the radiator & heater core from the hot coolant absorbing heat in the running engine "block".

When the coolant in the engine reaches a specific temperature (180 ~ 195 degrees) as determined by the value selected by manufacturer or when replaced, it opens and allows the hot coolant in the engine block to be pumped out to the radiatot & heater core for cooling and the cool coolant in the radiator / heater core is pumped into the engine block - replacing the hot coolant. The thermostat senses cool coolant in the engine block and seals shut until the temperature of the coolant in the engine block rises to 180 ~ 195 degrees again. This process continues over and over for as long as needed.

You should check to make sure that the coolant level in the reservoir / radiator is sufficient by checking when cold. Do NOT remove a radiator cap when it is hot! With the cap off, start the engine and add additional coolant as the engine warms up to normal operating temperature. If coolant levels are ok, the trouble could be related to the thermostat or possibly a faulty temperature sending switch. This means that the temperature of the coolant is fine - but the switch or sensor that converts the temperature to a voltage for the gauge on yur dashboard is the problem.

Water tempature gauge shows hot when car is cool ;and hasn't been driven


It sounds like the temp sender may be bad. This is the sensor that sends a signal to the gauge on the dash (as opposed to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor that goes to the ECU instead.) It is located on the bottom front of the thermostat housing (which you will find if you follow the large hose from the top right of the radiator.)

Before replacing, make sure the connection is clean and secure, then check the wiring for any obvious failures.

Heater is not getting hot and the temperature needle isn't working


First I would have said your thermostat is stuck open. But if the engine is overheating and the gauge reads cold the cooling system is probably empty. Or there may be alot of air pockets in the cooling system instead of all liquid coolant.
If the system was full and the water pump failed the heater might not work but the gauge would read hot.

try feeling your heater hoses going from the engine to the heater core. they should be hot at operating temperature. If one is hotter than the other noticably it would indicate a restriction in the core most likely. A partially stuck thermostat could also cause loss of heat but you say the temp is normal. Start with checking hose temperature if they are both on the cool side compared to the radiator hose then further diagnostics are necessary. hope this helps. Keep in touch.

Is the coolant level full? Sounds like air pockets, as a temperature sensor can't read air temperature. If it looks good, you might have a circulation problem, due to plugged radiator, or heater core, or possibly a worn out water pump. You can also "feel" around the thermostat to see if it's opening properly.
