Question about 2001 Nissan Sentra

1 Answer

2001 sentra (81k) started up short 7% grade hill - half way lost power and started to idle rough and check engine light started flashing. Proceeded about 2mi to destination. A couple of hrs later I checked all fluids etc. The following day took to my mechanic and was told I needed 1 new ignition coil and plugs were fouled too. Picked up after repairs put less than 20mi on it and check engine light came on (and stays on). Back to machanic, they checked code and said now is indicating inefficient cat. They reset light, said if it came back on again they would check again. Car went 10.8mi before light came on solid again and stil. Could this be something simple like a sensor, or could this be as a result of the original problem? Hate to put in a new cat for obvious reasons. (car does now run smooth since repair and if not for the light wouldn't know that there was a problem). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mary Ann

Do you believe that this is a result of the ignition coil going out and /or plugs fouling or just my special kind of luck? M.A.

Hi!!!

Every time there is an emisions problem your check engine light comes on and stores a code in the memory in which, using a OBDII scanner, it can be retreived later and proper repair should be made. If the code that is coming up means that your catalytic converter is inefficient, it means that from now on, it won't perform it's job properly. In other words, you will be polluting the environment more than the any other car with a good cat. If your vehicle is working fine now is because your oxygen sensor is still working but if repairs are not made, it will eventualy go out, your car will stop, you will need a tow truck to take vehicle to a shop, etc.

So my recomendation is, fix the cat and save some money. : )

Thanks

Yes, I beleive the coil and plugs help to mess up the cat.

Even if you don't think so, I think you are lucky to find the source of your problems when it is still fixable that should give you a peace of mind : )

Honda accord ex 2001 check engine light suddenly came on, car started to idle roughly

If it's running rough, chances are that it's misfiring. If the Check Engine light is flashing/blinking, it is definitely misfiring.
If that's the case, drive it as little as possible... Or straight to the mechanic because the more you drive it while it's misfiring, the higher the chance is of you ruining your catalytic converter.

Own a 2001 nissan sentra check egine light is on, car will start but runs very rough and smell of fuel. It will idle roughly in park, but once in gear no power

sounds like engine rebuild time and you need to have the transmition rebuilt too. i hope this helps. if you want to try flush the engine and fuel lines with ethenol. but if you flush the engine you will need to empty the fuel tank first. after you flush the engine full with fuel and run at idol for a couple of minutes. treat the fuel. this should help the engine to run properly whilst you wait to rebuild it. give it a service too. when you flush the engine too white smoke should be emitted from the exhaust or if you have a catilitic converter the white smoke should be reduced. hope this helps.
