A P0303 code means that the the car's computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #3.

Symptoms may include:

  • the engine may be harder to start
  • the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate
  • other symptoms may also be present

A code P0303 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty spark plug or wire
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Running out of fuel
  • Poor compression
  • Defective computer

If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs).

Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced.

In addition to what has already been said by techbuster, remeber if a catalytic converter has gone bad usually the vehicle will hardly run after it is driven a short time as the vacumn builds due to the honey comb or pellet interior construction sort of melting down causing the "cat" to clog restricting the exhaust, quick check it using a vacumn gauge at the intake manifold it should drop real fast when the car starts to barely run, most causes of a "cat" meltdown/clog are due to an engine that is dumping too much raw fuel into the cat causing it to clog. Conditions may be fuel injectors being programmed to run rich possibly from a faulty coolant temp sensor that doesn't allow the ECM to realize the vehicle is warmed up and doesn't need the fuel injectors spray pattern to be wide acting sort of the way the old carburated choke systems did to a cold engine sticking and causing a rich condition.

Misfire p0303

Check wiring harness around and including plug to the coil pack. Also check fuel pressure with vehicle running. I'm not sure of the specs but, Iit should be around 35 to 40 psi. at idle, and 50 to 75 at higher RPM's. I've seen Fords run with a bad fuel pump and demonstrate these exact symptoms

Have 2005 f-150 5.4l. Reading codes p0203 and p0303. What is it and how hard to fix

Well code 203 is a problem with the injector circuit for cylinder 3, and code 303 is saying cylinder 3 is not producing power.
So the cause of 203 could also cause 303.
I would check the injector and the circuit first.

Have a 2005 f-150 5.4.having trouble with codes. p0053,p0203,p0303 and pO453. Where to start and can u fix one thing to cancel out 2 or more codes.

code p0053 refers to heated oxygen sensor (HOS) bank 1-circiut malfunction===causes --wiring --- HO2S
code p0203 refers to injector 3 circuit malfunction==causes---wiring--injector ---ECM
code p03030refers to cylinder 3-- misfire detected===causes--engine mechanical fault--wiring---ignition/ fuel system---injector---ECT/MAF sensor---ECM
code p0453 refers to Evaporative emissions(EVAP) pressure sensor--high input==causes---wiring short to positive--EVAP sensor---ECM
code po203 and po303 both have injector as possible fault but the others you will have to fix separately. I doubt an ECM fault as there would be more problems evident so check that one last as it big dollars.

Three sensors need checking/replacing
MAF sensor(mass airflow sensor)
ECM (engine control module)
ECT (engine coolant temp sensor)
Engine control module sounds good

Missing,viborating

Misfire could be a number of things:
a) spark plugs - change them if used over 15K miles - inspect/regap.
b) spark plug wires - change them if over 15K miles - inspect
c) ECM (electronic control module) - test with HEI (high energy ignition) tester.

The vibrating tells me that the engine is running on less than its normal compliment of cylinders - the shaking is produced by the imbalance caused in the engine by one (or more) cylinder(s)
not firing at all.

The "Check Engine" light probably is coming on due the the misfire condition. Go to Pep Boys or
Advance Auto Pats, where they'll tell you (free) your codes causing the "Check Engine' light to be
lit - the code coming from your truck's computer will probably be one or more of:
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder misfire detected
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfire detected
P0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire detected
P0305 - Cylinder 5 misfire detected
P0306 - Cylinder 6 misfire detected
P0307 - Cylinder 7 misfire detected
P0308 - Cylinder 8 misfire detected
P0313 - Misfire detected with low fuel

We have a 2001 ford windstar with a 3.8, it started running rough and then the check engine light started flashing, we stopped driving it, pulled the codes and it was a p0303, we replaced the spark plug...

It's common for ignition coils to go on these vehicles. If you have a spark tester (auto parts store) install it on your #3 plug wire and check for a strong spark. By swapping the wire you obviously eliminated it as a possibility. There's always a chance that you have a compression problem or ad injector problem but chances are it's just a bad ignition coil. Mark the wires then remove them. You can remove the coil without accessing major components but it will be tight. Disconnect the connector and remove the bolts.

If not, look at the coil for hairline cracks. I see a lot of coils go bad and the vehicle will run worse when it's damp or raining out. Good luck!

It is possible that the wire may have been damaged and is arcing. Check the wire, may also be the plug. If that doesnt solve the issue it could be the ignition coil.
