On a dodge neon the fuel pump is in the SIDE of the tank... NOT the top. to remove the pump follow these steps...
******* first unplug battery and remove ********
1. unbolt passenger side tank strap and lower side of tank.
2. a. if tank is plastic, CAREFULLY unscrew plastic retainer ring but do NOT remove.
b. if metal tank, unscrew metal retainer flange but do NOT remove
3. unplug electrical connector and fuel line from pump. move aside.
4. completely remove retainer BE CAREFUL not to disturb pump.
5. have drain pan or wide-shallow bucket available to collect gas. (if tank is full this will need to be able to hold 7-8 gallons)
6. gently twist and pull pump out till gas comes fourth. catch gas in pan/bucket.
7. remove pump when gas stops flowing.
8. install is reverse of removal.
9 BE CAREFUL not to wrinkle gasket or lose gasket into tank when installing or the tank will leak around pump.
10. tighten retainer but DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
11. reconnect plug and fuel lines check for leaks.
12. reattach tank strap and fasten
13. refill tank with clean gas. check for leaks.
14. put battery back in. connect battery, start your neon and check for leaks one last time.
15, have fun. this will take about 4hrs to do by yourself with proper tools.

You'll need to vent your fuel pressure by opening the fuel cap and then remove the bolts holding the fuel tank in place, then lower tank and the fuel pump will be recessed in the top of the tank be careful not to damage any wiring during this process.

Where is the fuel pump located on a 2001 Dodge Neon?

The 2001 Dodge Neon is one of the many vehicles that has the fuel pump installed within a special module mounted inside the fuel tank. If you need to change the fuel pump, you will need to remove the fuel tank to reach the pump module. While the individual components of the module can be replaced, the recommended procedure is to change the module as a whole. Disconnecting and transferring the fuel sending unit to a new pump requires you to remove terminals on the electrical connectors. which is a job that amateurs should probably avoid. The brain trust from Detroit, instead of using a lot of common sense and placing it in the engine compartment where it could be gotten at easily, decided to put it in the tank. That way before replacing same you have to drain the tank, remove the tank and replace the unit. Then reinstall the tank and since you have it off, why not replace the straps also. This way it costs about $400 instead if the old $75 or so.

95 neon shuts off after 20 mins of runing

Hi Robert, I suggest taking the vehicle for a diagnostic scan. It sounds as though the fault reappears after the vehicle reaches operating temperature and therefore could be something to do with the air flow sensor or the management system (But the latter is not likely) Regards John

1998 dodge neon fuel pump installation

you will have to take the vacuum canister mounted by the fuel tank loose lower the tank enough to let the pump clear the fender well, remove the big plastic nut from around the pump assembly, disconnect the fuel lines and unplug the assembly remove and replace. be sure to disconnect the battery because you could short the new one out when reconnecting the plug.

I am having trouble with my speedometer not working occasionally and now my seat belt light is coming on sometimes too. Is this the instrument panel cluster? Or something else? 1998 Dodge Neon. Backstory is as follows: -We take very good care of it and have one dedicated mechanic. -It has only had two owners; my parents and I. -We replaced the battery 2 months ago. -Mechanic checked to make sure the speedometer sensor was working. -We have had issues with the radio for years where it will randomly turn on and off, typically brought on by a stuffed trunk OR wet weather. -The speedometer works until we hit a bump and then the needle flies up and down or sometimes just stops working all together. -Mechanic has made mention of there being some Chrysler specific battery cable that is a smaller side cable and it is not in good condition. -Currently, my problem is that I can't find an old 1998 Dodge Neon in the salvage yard because yards are doing a lot of 2002 and newer vehicles and automatically crushing the others. The meat and potatoes of my question is what direction do I go in? And what of these symptoms ties to each other? And will adding new solder to the points on the panel fix it or is it something else? I'm trying to find least expensive to most expensive options and I'm rather handy but can't drop an engine or transmission or anything so keep this in mind. My handiness ends at resoldering the pins BUT I do have a mechanic I trust, but I fear that maybe I'm not combining symptoms properly. I have the money to repair an item I KNOW is wrong but not to chicken hunt around for problems.
