Question about 2001 Ford Focus

1 Answer

Steering knocking noises heard when turning Ford Focus mk1, The noise is only heard when turning half lock on a left or right corner, The noise is not heard at speeds above 50 mph only at relatively low speeds, i've lubricated the linkage rods to try to eliminate that as a cause to the problem. Any help on this problem would be much appreciated Thanks.

Steering noise at turning left and right

If the noise is heard just at the steering wheel when turned left or right, then remove the steering wheel and apply a little multipurpose grease or white petroleum jelly on a brass band under the steering wheel.
If the noise is heard coming from under the engine bay, check the entire suspension system for worn out ball joints, tie rod ends, rack ends, rubber bushes and shock absorbers.

Hi there,

it could be:

>wheels rubbing on inside of wheel arch
>steering linkage hitting something

Try putting the car on a lift/ if you can, and get someone to steer it full lock to full lock both sides whilst you observe the steering mechanism, then you might be able to see what's happening.

Have a nice day :)

My ford focus has started humming in front end

this sounds like a hub bearing, to determine which one it is when your driving and you here the noise turn the steering wheel slightly left and then slightly right, the noise should get louder or lighter. If louder on right turn then it would be left bearing is bad because your putting more weight on the left side

Being modified focus, the chances are you may have thrown the rod. You can tell when the rod is knocking, or could be bad valves tapping. any mechanic can listen to it and tell you what exactly what making that noise, don't recommend driving that car with a bad valves or rod knocking. on most any modified engine, its common to throw a rod or blow the pistons.

cv joints click when turning corners. usually turning left means right joint is bad , turning right means left is bad... hard to tell with out looking at it , but sounds like a bad axle,

My ford focus 04 auto makes a grinding noise when the steering is on full lock to the right also the power steering fluid gets low very quickly

you have a power steering leak, when in full lock position the power steering pump is actually sucking in air and this is your noise. you will have to locate the leak and replace the leaking part and fill it to proper level.Ford will accept trans fluid for power steering fluid.
