Question about 1994 Oldsmobile Achieva Special Edition

1994 oldsmobile ahieva , new water pump, thermostate and radiator. Won't cool. Water pump does not seem to be pumping water.

In the USA the Estima is called Previa, and there may be some differences, depending on whether it has the 2.4L or a 2.2L engine or other options.
Labor Time for this job is One hour.
The water pump on the 2.4 Liter engine is accessed under the vehicle, very likely the same on any engine for these models.
Follow the radiator hoses to the engine until you find the water pump, which is near one of the drive axles.
The thermostat is bolted to the water pump with two bolts.
Drain the cooling system, then using a large pan under to catch any extra coolant when removing the thermostat housing.
Carefully clean the surfaces of both the thermostat housing and the water pump. [Check water pump for coolant seepage, which leaves a crusty beige or pink deposit. If so, replace the water pump.]

Install a new thermostat and gasket (Or O-ring).
Refill the coolant with the same coolant only if it looks clean.
I would also test the coolant to see what the PH is, which needs to be about 7.2 PH. (Coolant will turn acid over time, even when it looks okay.)
Make sure you put as much coolant back into the system as you removed.
Fully warm up the engine, and let it cool down before removing the radiator cap, then check for air in the system, topping up as needed.
The radiator needs to be full to the top.
Also check the overflow reservoir, which has level marks of Low and High, Never fill over the High mark.

Check to see if your fan is coming on. if it is then check the middle of your radiator if it is cool while the outside is hot you have plugged radiator

Engine overheating - water pump Good, Thermostate good, The water blows out of the reservoir.


How do you know the water pump and thermostat are good ?
Have they been replaced ? Did you check the fan clutch ? Restriction in the air flow thru the radiator ?
If they are new and installed correctly, and the cooling system is full and has no air pockets, and the engine overheats within a few minutes of driving, I would expect to find a blown head gasket.

Any clogged cooling hose water, bad water pump or clogged radiator. Are you check any leak of coolant or white smoke from exhauts?

94 Jetta w/2.0 engine overheats.I took it to a mechanic and he said my thermostat was fine.So what else could be causing it to overheat??And it does have a small oil leak too but I can't pin point it.


Overheating could be anything in the cooling system. Thermostat is out, could be radiator, water pump, broken belts which cause the water pump to not move, cylinder head warped, cracked, or the cylinder head gasket.

Van running hot replaced water pumb thermostate


my car still hot .we change the water pump,thermostat,coolant temperature sensor ,rad cap,and still hot the gauge is up and down??????

Engine temp and heater temp not right.


Take it to another shop, The water pump doen't hold the Thermostate. The thermostate is in the thermostate housing where the end of the radiator hose is connected to the egine. 
There are different thermostate rating to which temprature you'll like your engine running at. Most common would be a 190 thermostate you can get them from 160 up to 220. 
As for the water pump you would know if that failed do to over heating or leaking from the weep holes in it. 
Bring the truck to another shop and have them flush and Antifreeze if it's never benn done and change the Thermostate to a 180 or 190 and should be done every Two years do to waer and tear. Note the 180 runs cooler then the 190 and so on. 
I run mine on 160 since I tow a trailer and the radiator also cools the transmisson oil too. Just for though but you should be fine at 180 or 190.

hi jasso, I would recommend checking the water pump if you see no flow in the radiator. Make sure when you fill up the cooling system, that you fill it cold, and that the vent screw in the radiator is loose. fill system until fluid comes out the vent screw. tighten the screw, start the car and have someone run at 1500rpm and check for flow.also, make sure that you have your temp setting full hot and blower on middle speed so that you don't trap air in the heater core.

There seems to be an air pocket or no antifreeze in engine block. Try this method disconnect upper radiator hose and pour water directly into hose down into engine block until it full. when its filled reconnect hose and fill up radiator. as the vehicle warms up open bleeder valve on the thermostat housing and release air from system. open slowly and BE VERY CAREFUL WATER WILL BE HOT, bleed until you get a steady stream opening and cosing valve. However if all of this don't work. You may have a bad pump. Good Luck
