Your split manifold located on the firewall that sends and directs the refrigerant from the front and rear depending on your setting on the dash is plugged or the climate control on the dash is not responding and there could be a fuse, relay, broken wire, but there cant be a leak or either side wouldn't cool

SOURCE: front a/c blows cold air but back is blowing hot air

Could be low on freon, a faulty expansion valve on the rear system, or other issues. Can you tell if the rear ac lines are hot and cold ?

1997 gmc rear air conditioner is blowing hot

Could be a blockage in the lines to the rear unit.
Might be low on freon too. Or a blend door problem.
Can you check under the floor and see if one of the lines is cold ?

Our heater takes about 20 mins to blow warm air, and then if we are stopped at a light and the engine is idling it gets cold. Also, in the summer when we turn on the a/c it blows hotin the front and cool...

always check the coolant first, then feel both heater hoses to see if they are equally hot.
if one hot and one cold, then the heater core is clogged
if both hot then you have a blend door problem.
on the a/c there's some time a rear unit that blow cool air even the front does not

Clunking noise

The unit in the back has its own heater core. That's what i thought the clunking was.It has to clunck to go into heating mode.It shuts off the airconditioner The clunk noise just gets louder with age because the strip around the door wears off. The unit in the front has it's heater core is underneath the glove box real hard to get to. In other word's it has two heater cores. That's why i suggested just reversing the hoses and just flushing till you could afford heater core replacement.
God Bless Greg
