The transmission does not need to be removed with the engine or its mounts loosened. However, I do recommend removing the pulleys from the front of the engine as this will allow more room to slide the engine away from the trans during removal.

2001 hyundai elantra goes in2 reverse but won't go backwards all other gears r perfect

Most automatic transmissions have a separate belt for reverse and all forward gears, The reverse belt is commonly lighter duty that the forward belt (some Chryslers were affected so much it was advised to not shift into reverse until the engine had warmed up and the automatic choke idled down) Thus your car would be in "reverse" but with no motion getting to the gears.

Hi there, I live in Colombia South America and I have a HYUNDAI Elantra 2001 automatic transmission and it behaves exactly like yours. I have the best mechanic guy intown and also the dealer garage take down the whole transmission and nothing changed. It seems now to be something with the electric wiring system.

I would recommend you to have the electric system checked.

Good luck.
