It could be any of the following,

1. The field wire to the starter (the wire that is hot when you turn the ignition switch to the start position, and should be connected to the "S" on the solenoid) has the wire connector pushed over and touching against the main connection and battery cable on the solenoid, or has insulation missing somewhere on the wire and the exposed wire is touching together with an exposed wire from one of the constantly hot wires from the main battery connection on the solenoid.

2. The ignition switch is stuck in the start position (the switch itself, not the key and tumbler) however if you were not having a problem with the ignition switch before you replaced the starter then it is unlikely to be the problem.

3. The starter solenoid is defective. This does happen once in a while and you should be able to have the starter tested where you bought it from.

My 2004 Chevy Silverado 3500 won't start I get clicking and the lights work, battery is new and has full charge and I replaced the starter and it ran great for about a month. Now I cannot get it to st

Believe it or not the starter may have gone bad again. Check all wires to the starter motor too. One broken or loose wire there will do it too. With the headlights on, attempt starting, if lights don't dim even a little then the load on the battery is not increasing indicating an open circuit to the starter OR inside the starter.

When I turn key to start my 2004 Titan I am getting a click on right hand passenger side dash area instead of starter engaging with increasing frequency. Autozone found no codes and battery, starter,

Thats normally a sign of bad connection on battery terminals friend.

Try undoing them and taking them apart to clean up the battery posts and cable connectors then reconnect tightly.

What happens is the bad connection wont let a LARGE current throgh, So when you turn the key, all you are hearing is the little solenoid trying to send large current to the starter motor which is not happening.

It is a simple and VERY cheap job.

2000 c2500 starter cranks without ignition key on

I think that you have a defective starter solenoid, this the part that is mounted to the top of the starter.

The starter seems to be engaging, even without the key in. I just replaced the starter with a new one about a month ago. I disconnected the battery to stop it. if I try to reconnect the battery it sparks...

Try the starter solenoid, the contacts may be welded in it. I am not sure if the Ford Ranger has a starter relay also in the fuse box. If the starter solenoid is good then it could be the starter relay has contacts welded. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

Put new starter in, now when i reconnect the negative cable the car tries to start without turning the key. help

Disconnect the small terminal to the starter solenoid and reconnect the main battery cable, if the starter still tries to engage then you have a faulty starter solenoid and should take the starter back to where you brought it. Ask them to test/repair the starter and after it is repaired or replaced you shouldn't have that problem again.

1991 mustang 2.l starter staying engaged

what happens if you pull the shift lever into gear to cut off the neutral-park safety switch? This cuts pwer from the key to the starter solenoid. If that fixes it, replace the igniton switch.
