REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L Engines
See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

  1. Remove the timing cover. This will allow access to the timing chain.
  2. Crank the engine until the timing marks on both sprockets are nearest each other and in line between the shaft centers.

  1. On 1996-98 vehicles remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring, if equipped. On 7.4L engines tool J-41371 or its equivalent puller must be used to remove the reluctor ring.
  2. Take out the bolts that hold the camshaft gear to the camshaft. This gear is a light press fit on the camshaft and will come off easily. It is located by a dowel. The chain comes off with the camshaft gear.

A gear puller will be required to remove the crankshaft gear.
To install:

  1. Without disturbing the position of the engine, mount the new crankshaft gear on the shaft, and mount the chain over the camshaft gear. Arrange the camshaft gear in such a way that the timing marks will line up between the shaft centers and the camshaft locating dowel will enter the dowel hole in the cam sprocket.
  2. Place the cam sprocket, with its chain mounted over it, in position on the front of the truck and pull up with the three bolts that hold it to the camshaft.
  3. After the gears are in place, turn the engine two full revolutions to make certain that the timing marks are in correct alignment between the shaft centers. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts (and nut on the 4.3L) to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) on 1988-95 models. On 1996-98 models, tighten the bolts to 18 ft. Lbs. (25 Nm). On the 7.4L, tighten them to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) on 1988-95 models. On 1996-98 models, tighten the bolts to 25 ft. Lbs. (34 Nm).

When installing the crankshaft position sensor you must use install a new oil ring seal onto the sensor.
  1. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring (if equipped), onto the crankshaft until it is firmly seated against the crankshaft sprocket. On 1996-98 7.4L vehicles replace the reluctor ring with a new component.
  2. Install the front cover, torsional damper, water pump and the radiator.

  1. Remove the grille, radiator, and timing cover.
  2. Remove the distributor, fuel pump, oil pan and oil pump.
  3. Align the timing marks. Unbolt the camshaft thrust plate, working through the holes in the camshaft gear.
  4. Loosen the rocker arms, remove the pushrods, take off the side cover and remove the valve lifters with a magnet.
  5. Remove the camshaft very carefully to prevent nicking the bearings.
  6. Oil the camshaft bearing journals and use Lubriplate or something similar on the lobes. Install the camshaft, gear, and thrust plate, aligning the gear marks. Tighten down the thrust plate. Make sure that the camshaft end-play is not excessive.
  7. The last item to be replaced is the distributor. The rotor should be at the firing position for no. 1 cylinder, with the timing gear marks aligned

V6 and V8 Including Diesel
Ford recommends removing the diesel engine for camshaft removal.
  1. Remove the intake manifold and valley pan, if so equipped.
  2. Remove the rocker covers, and either remove the rocker arm shafts or loosen the rockers on their pivots and remove the pushrods. The pushrods must be reinstalled in their original positions.
  3. Remove the valve lifters in sequence with a magnet. They must be replaced in their original positions.
  4. Remove the timing chain/gear cover and timing chain (timing gear on V8 diesel) and sprockets.
  5. In addition to the radiator and air conditioning condenser, if so equipped, it may be necessary to remove the front grille assembly and the hood lock assembly to gain the necessary clearance to slide the camshaft out of the front of the engine. On the V6-3.8L, remove the camshaft thrust button and spring. Remove the camshaft thrust plate attaching screws and carefully slide the camshaft out of its bearing bores. Use extra caution not to scratch the camshaft lobes.
Camshaft removal tools, Ford part no. T65L-6250-A and adaptor 14-0314 are needed to remove the diesel camshaft.
  1. Coat the camshaft with engine oil liberally before installing it. Slide the camshaft into the engine very carefully so as not to scratch the bearing bores with the camshaft lobes. Install the camshaft thrust plate and tighten the attaching screws to 9 - 12 ft. lbs. Measure the camshaft end-play. If the end-play is more than 0.009 inch; (0.228mm), replace the thrust plate. Assemble the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.

the timming gear that the belt runs on has a mark (V cut in gear) to rear cover at about 12 o clock and crank pulley has timming mark for top dead centre, both cams have cut outs in rear that a special tool (camshaft stopper 5-8840-2592-0) locks into to hold cams in correct position, but can do without this, if the cam belt gear is off, the keyway should be at 12 o clock. the marks in the camshaft gears (dots) is for assembly of sissor gears to solid gears on camshafts that run together and they should match up only if you had this appart.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Timing belt
    • Crankcase ventilation tube from the valve cover
    • Spark plug cover bolts and the cover
    • Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
    • Spark plug wires from the plugs
    • Valve cover nuts, washers, cover and gasket
    NOTE: Be very careful not to nick or scratch the camshafts.
  4. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and remove the camshaft gear bolt. Remove the gear.
  5. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and remove the camshaft gear bolt. Remove the gear.
  6. Mark the camshaft cap locations so that they may be returned to their original positions.
  7. Remove the camshaft cap bolts in the sequence illustrated.

    To install:
  9. Lubricate the camshafts and caps with engine oil.
  10. Install the caps and the camshafts in their original positions.

  12. Measure the camshaft endplay on both camshafts. The endplay should be 0.003-0.009 in. (0.10-0.25mm).
  13. Install the intake camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  14. Install the exhaust camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  15. Apply a small amount of gasket sealer to the corners of the front camshaft caps and to the top of the rear valve cover-to-cylinder head seal.
  16. Install or connect the following:
    • Valve cover, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • Spark plug wires to the plugs
    • Spark plug cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    • CMP sensor connector
    • Crankcase ventilation tube to the valve cover
    • Timing belt
2.0L and 2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Timing belt
    • Crankcase ventilation tube from the valve cover
    • Spark plug cover bolts and the cover
    • Spark plug wires from the plugs
    • Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
    • Valve cover nuts, washers, cover and gasket
    NOTE: Be very careful not to nick or scratch the camshafts.
  4. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and remove the camshaft gear bolt. Remove the gear.
  5. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and remove the camshaft gear bolt. Remove the gear.
  6. Mark the camshaft cap locations so that they may be returned to their original positions.
  7. Remove the camshaft cap bolts in several passes of one half turn each in the sequence illustrated.
  8. Remove the seal ring from the camshafts. NOTE: Make sure the camshafts detaches evenly from the bearing seats in the front guide bearing.

    To install:
  10. Lubricate the camshafts and caps with engine oil.
  11. Install the caps and the camshafts in their original positions.

  13. Measure the camshaft endplay on both camshafts. The endplay should be 0.0015-0.0056 in. (0.040-0.144mm).
  14. Install the intake camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the intake camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), retighten the bolt an additional 60 degree turn and finally an additional 15 degree turn.
  15. Install the exhaust camshaft gear. Hold the flats of the exhaust camshaft in position using an open ended wrench and tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), retighten the bolt an additional 60 degree turn and finally an additional 15 degree turn.
  16. Install or connect the following:
    • Valve cover, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    • CMP sensor connector
    • Spark plug wires to the plugs
    • Spark plug cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    • Crankcase ventilation tube to the valve cover
    • Timing belt
    • Negative battery cable

I need to know the camshaft timing on my 1991 corolla. It has the 1.6


With the Keyway on the crankshaft at the 12 O'Clock position the timing mark on the crank shaft gear shiuld line up with the timing mark on the crankcase at the 1 O'Clock position.
For the Camshaft gear, the small hole under the " 4A " on the gear should line up with the indent on the front camshaft bearing cap. The approximate correct oposition of the camshaft gear is also indicated by the No. 4 Cylinder exhaust valves just closing and the inlet valves just opening.

To Install:
  1. Install balance shaft drive gear onto the left camshaft.
  2. Install the camshaft sprockets and new bolts finger tight.
  3. Using a vise, compress the timing chain tensioner plunger.
  4. Install a retaining clip on the tensioner to hold plunger IN during installation.

  5. If timing chain copper links are not visible, mark 2 links on one end and 1 link on the other end to be used as timing marks.
  6. Install right and left timing chain guides. Tighten bolts to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm).
  7. Rotate the left camshaft until the timing mark is at the 12 o'clock position.
  8. Rotate the right camshaft until the timing mark is at the 11 o'clock position.
  9. Position the crankshaft using the special tool. Then remove the tool.

  10. Install the crankshaft sprocket with flange facing forward.

  11. Position lower end of left (inner) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket. Align the copper (or marked) chain link with the timing mark on the outer flange of the crankshaft pulley. NOTE: Upper half of timing chain must be below the tensioner arm dowel.
  12. Position the left timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. The timing mark on the camshaft sprocket must be aligned between the 2 copper (or marked) chain links.

  13. Place the left timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the timing chain tensioner and bolts. Tighten bolts to 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm). NOTE: Lower half of timing chain must be above the tensioner arm dowel.

  14. Position lower end of right (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket. Align the copper (or marked) chain link with the timing mark on the outer flange of the crankshaft pulley.

  15. Position the right timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. The timing mark on the camshaft sprocket must be aligned between the 2 copper (or marked) chain links.
  16. Place the right timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the timing chain tensioner and bolts. Tighten bolts to 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm).
  17. Remove the retaining clips from the right and left timing chain tensioners.
  18. Verify alignment of all timing marks.
  19. Install crankshaft sensor ring on crankshaft.
  20. Locate index mark on balance shaft and mark corresponding gear tooth with chalk.
  21. Position balance shaft on journals. NOTE: It may be helpful to use an inspection mirror to view the marks timing marks.
  22. Align the chalk mark on the balance shaft with the camshaft timing mark.

  23. Install the balance shaft bearing caps in their original locations. Follow the tightening sequence as shown in the illustration. Tighten bolts to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm).
  24. Tighten the camshaft phaser sprocket bolts in the correct sequence using 2 steps, as follows:
    • Step 1-30 ft-lbs (40 Nm)
    • Step 2-tighten an additional 90 degrees
  25. Position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o'clock position.
  26. Lubricate and install all camshaft roller followers. WARNING
    Engine front cover replacement procedure must be completed within 4 minutes or entire procedure must be repeated. Failure to do so may result in future leaks

the timing marks are as follows... the camshaft gear mark will be roughly in the 4 o clock position... the mark on the gear needs to line up with a small pointer on the rear cover. the shear pin in the camshaft will be pointing vertically... the crankshaft timing mark will be roughly in the 1 or 2 oclock positiona small dot on the front of the crankshaft gear will need to line up with with a small dot or notch on the oil pump housing...

Align the timing marks on the camshaft gears to the notches on the camshaft cover, using the intake gear mark for the intake gear and the exhaust gear mark for the exhaust gear.
Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the
notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.
