Question about 2000 Volkswagen Golf

I have a vw polo 6n2 1.0l, the gearbox is whining loudly. I noticed an oil leak a while back but has since stopped. Gear selection remains ok although reverse 'crunches' mileage 70k. Sounds like a bearing runnning dry?

Thanks for your help/advice, since been in contact with a local vw specialist who confirms :( cheaper to buy a re-con box for roughly £400 as could get the car back same day. Can anyone suggest a good place to order one from?

Sounds like a minor bearing fault, can be fixed quite simply although you would need to take the box out and send it to a transmission specialist to replace the faulty bearing(s)

The bearing probably is running dry a seal or the bearing is leaking probably a seal if you saw the oil.

Sounds like maybe a shaft bearing in the gearbox is the problem. Check the fluid level to be sure it at the proper level...you can also drain and refill if it's dirty...inspect the old oil for signs of metal shavings or a lot of glitter from gear wear. After driving a ways, touch the gearbox and see if it's excessively hot....all these will help you troubleshoot.

Hi Val,first of all the gearboxes for all vw are made in the same factory in germany and if one model of car was giving trouble the whole range would suffer.i.e.SEAT/SKODA/AUDI/VW.I have not heard of any specific cars giving trouble.but to answer your problem, get the linkage checked by a dealer as these tend to wear and a specific tool is required to set them up properly.and while they are under the car get them to change the oil for the gearbox.you do not need to get a NEW gearbox as a reconditioned one is MUCH cheaper.if you want to down that road.(you will still need to get the linkage set up).
hope this sorts it out for you.regards. geoff,England.

more likely to be a worn baulk ring.do yourself a favour and rebuild the box,its so much easier and will last longer.to test, apply slight hand pressure to gearlever in drive and over run if it slips out......its time for a rebuild....

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.

You will need to check the gear linkage hasits free movement and the gearbox mounting is secure. This happen on a Polo recently and the securing bolt to the gearbox mounting had fallen off leaving the gearbox hanging. I hope this helps you.

There is a special additive lubricant for gear transmission to solve this problem. Just add on to gear oil. I had the same problem. now ok.
