How do i remove the brake drum of a 1997 hyunidai excel do i need to remove the centre nut that also takes out the wheel bearing

With Rear Hub Bearing

  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2. Remove the wheels.
  3. Remove the dust cap, cotter pin and loosen the locknut
  4. Remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes.
  1. Remove the drum with the inner wheel bearing from the spindle.
To install:
  1. Install the drum on the spindle.
  2. Install the outer wheel bearing and washer.
  3. Tighten the locknut to 108-145 ft. lbs. (150-200 Nm). Turn the brake drum while tightening the spindle nut to seat the wheel bearings.
  4. Install the cotter pin and dust cap.
  5. Install the wheels
  6. Adjust the rear brakes.

    Before raising the rear of your Honda, remove the dust cup from the center of the brake drums using a hammer and chisel. This will give you access to the spindle nut, which you can loosen using an axle nut socket. Then you can raise and remove the wheel/tire assembly ,or assemblies if you are replacing the bearings on both wheels.

    If your Honda model is equipped with rear disc brakes, remove the brake disc retaining screws, the brake hose bracket from the steering knuckle and caliper bracket mounting bolts. Hang the caliper to the coil spring using wire. Do not let the caliper hang free or the brake hose may be damaged.

    At this point, you will be able to remove the brake disc by hand. However, rust may have a firm grip on the disc. If this is the case, use a couple of 8-by-1.25 mm bolts and screw them evenly into the brake disc threaded holes. This will push the disc off the hub. Now you can finish removing the spindle nut and hub/wheel bearing assembly and install the new hub/wheel bearing assembly using a new spindle nut

    If your Honda Civic comes equipped with rear brake drums, remove the center grease cup and loosen the axle spindle nut using an axle nut socket. After raising and removing the wheel/tire assembly, finish removing the axle nut and washer.

    You might be able to remove the outer wheel bearing from the spindle using a screwdriver. If not, wiggle the brake drum as you pull on it to let the bearing fall off the spindle. However, the brake drum might be caught in place by the brake shoes. In this case, you can retract the brake shoes through the hole in the back of the backing plate.

    Remove the rubber plug from the back of the backing plate. Then rotate the star wheel on the adjusting screw using a brake adjusting tool as you push the lever off the start wheel with a screwdriver. With the brake shoes off the brake drum, pull the brake drum off the wheel assembly. Then clean the brake assembly with brake parts cleaner and a clean, lint-free towel.

    Now you can set the brake drum on a workbench or hard surface and remove the grease seal and inner wheel bearing. The inner and outer wheel-bearing races can be removed using a drift punch and hammer. Pack the new wheel bearings with high-temperature wheel-bearing grease using a wheel-bearing packer and use a new grease seal during installation. Also, before reinstalling the brake drum, apply a thick coat of wheel-bearing grease to the cavity inside the hub, but do not fill it completely.

Remove rear brake drums


Light Duty Models
  1. Raise the vehicle so that the wheel to be worked on is clear of the floor and install jackstands under the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel. Remove the three retaining nuts and remove the brake drum. It may be necessary to back off the brake shoe adjustment in order to remove the brake drum. This is because the drum might be grooved or worn from being in service for an extended period of time.
  3. Before installing a new brake drum, be sure to remove any protective coating with brake cleaner or a suitable fast-drying degreaser.
  4. Install the brake drum in the reverse order of removal and adjust the brakes.

Heavy Duty
  1. Raise the vehicle and install jackstands.
  2. Remove the wheel. Loosen the rear brake shoe adjustment.
  3. Remove the rear axle retaining bolts and lockwashers, axle shaft, and gasket.
  4. Remove the wheel bearing locknut, lockwasher, and adjusting nut.
  5. Remove the hub and drum assembly from the axle.
  6. Remove the brake drum-to-hub retaining screws, bolts or bolts and nut. Remove the brake drum from the hub.

To install:

  1. Place the drum on the hub and attach it to the hub with the attaching nuts and bolts.
  2. Place the hub and drum assembly on the axle and start the adjusting nut.
  3. Adjust the wheel bearing nut and install the wheel bearing lockwasher and locknut.
  4. Install the axle shaft with a new gasket and install the axle retaining bolts and lockwashers.
  5. Install the wheel and adjust the brake shoes. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.

The rear drum wont come off as i would expect

Brake linings contain asbestos. Asbestos is a known cancer-causing agent. When working on brakes, remember that the dust which accumulates on the brake parts and/or in the drum contains asbestos. Always wear a protective face covering, such as a painter's mask, when working on the brakes. NEVER blow the dust from the brakes or drum.
  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. On vehicles without rear bearing hub, remove the dust cap, cotter pin, nut lock, wheel bearing nut and washer from the spindle. Remove the outer wheel bearing. Remove the drum with the inner wheel bearing from the spindle. If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes. Remove the grease seal.
  4. If equipped with a rear bearing hub, remove the drum by removing the retainer screws from the drum and pulling the drum from the hub assembly. If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes. To install:
  5. On vehicles equipped without rear bearing hub, lubricate and install the inner wheel bearing. Install a new grease seal. Install the drum to the spindle. Lubricate and install the outer wheel bearing, washer and nut. Adjust the bearing preload following the procedure outlined in the "Rear Wheel Bearing'' of this section. When the bearing preload is properly set, install the nut lock and a new cotter pin. Install the grease cap.
  6. On vehicles with rear bearing hub, install the brake drum to the hub assembly and install the retaining screws.
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Adjust the rear brakes as required.
  8. Apply the brakes until a firm pedal is obtained, prior to moving the vehicle.

Ok,remove wheel.The brake drum will come off with the hub as an assembly.Make sure the brake shoes are backed off enough to remove the assembly.If the inside of the drum isn`t worn to much,the drum will come off with a little effort.There will be a grease cap you need to remove.A large pair of channel lock pliers might work,if not try a flat head screwdriver and a hammer.There will be a lip around the grease cap sitting flush against the hub.Take the screwdriver and gently tap under the flange lip to see if the grease cap will start to move out away from the hub.Tilt the screwdriver handle towards the car,and tap the end of the screw driver so the cap will move toward you,away from car.Now go to the opposite side of the cap from where you are with the screwdriver now,and do the same thing.It can be a hassle to get it off without bending or peircing the cap.Continue until cap is removed.Two types of retaining nuts can be on this spindle.Look for a cotter pin going threw the nut(if it has a pin).Use a pair of needle noise pliers,and make the pin straight.You might use a pair of ****,or wire cutters to pull the cotter pin out.(remember to replace it with a new one when you go back with the new bearings)take the channel lock pliers and turn the nut counter clock wise to remove.It may have a cage around the nut you have to remove before you remove the nut with the channel lock pliers.If you have a nut without a cotter pin,then you have a lock nut.Lock nuts have to be removed with a lot more effort.Use a socket and a ratchet.and remove in the same order.There will be a large flat washer behind the nut after you remove the nut.Shimmey the brake drum back and forth side to side,and use the flat head screwdriver to helpremove the washer.The outer bearing is next,shimey the drum agai,or pull drum forward and remove drum and bearing.If it will not slide off easy.Use a peice of wood against the outer lip of drum,on back side and tap with hammer hard all the way around(please use goggles).If it does not try to come off,back brake adjuster off so brake shoes will let go.The inner bearing is on the inside of the drum.After you have the brake drum assembley in your hand,screw the nut back on the spindle about 5 or6 turns by hand.Put the drum back on until the nut is on the outside and you can see it.Now pick upward on drum and slide drum toward you about half way and stop and let the drum hang there.The nut should be half way inside the drum.With out picking up on the drum grasp drum and pull hard and fast toward you and the inner bearing and seal should be hanging on the spindle.To install new bearings ,pack the bearings with wheel bearing grease really good(they should have enough grease in them if they are not real easy to turn by hand.To remove the race(inner and outer)take a punch and place it on the race from the opposite side of where the race will come out(the race will come out the same side the bearing came out).Flip the drum(hub)over and remove the other race.Install the same way.but make sure the race is turned the right way(cup side out,not in)The bearing has to sit in the race.Ok the inner bearing is first to put in,then the seal.Tap the seal in with a hammer(also cup side in).Take the drum(hub)and slide it back on go over the the spindle,by twisting and pushing lightly,it has to go over a shoulder on the spindle.Then put the outer bearing in and the washer(notice the washer has a alienment that it will only go on one way).Now take the nut and put in on by hand .Take the channel lock pliers and tighten the nut until snug.Move the drum back and forth and tighten some more ,and alien the hole for the new cotter pin you purchsed and put the pin in.Bend the cotter pin so it can`t come out,and replace the grease cap and tap it on with hammer lightly,install wheel,and adjust brakes.To adjust brakes spin wheel and adjust brakes until the brake shoes start touching the drumuse a brake spoon).You are finished.

Rear wheel bearing (1999) very loud, how do i fix it??


Before changing the real wheel bearings, you should thoroughly inspect your rear brakes. You would disassemble the back brakes anyway to change the bearings, and changing the brakes is easier. Remember to block the wheels up front, yes - safety first. As you pull off the rear drums, if you have to struggle to get them off, then that is a definite sign of wear and you'll need to do a rear brake job. As rear drum brakes are used, they have an auto adjust screw that tests and resets your brakes to ensure they are at proper distance to the drum surface. As brake shoes wear into the drums, they can create a groove or lip on the inside of the drum that the brakes will get caught upon when you try to remove worn brake drums. There should be a little hole on the interior side of the brake drum assembly and where you can fit a brake adjustment tool into. After you get the tool in there, it will touch against a star shaped wheel which is actually an adjusting nut. If you have a very small phillips screwdriver, place it inside this same hole and push the little arm that is touching this little star shaped nut. Everytime you back up and hit the brakes, this automatic adjustment lever pushes down on the little star shaped nut making sure that the brakes are not loose (keeps them snug). After you have this lever pushed away from the star shaped nut, use the brake tool to begin turning the star shaped nut until you have moved the screw back together, and the brake shoes have moved back towards each other, and you should then be able to easilly slide the brake drum off.

Once you get the rear drums off, you should try to turn the rear hub on each side and listen for noise and the feel of metal grinding (it should turn freely and smoothly). If the brake pads and drums are in good shape (plenty of brake padding left and no signs of metal wear upon the drums) AND you can feel and or hear the grinding as you turn the wheel hub assembly, then proceed with continuing to replace the rear wheel bearings. However, the more likely scenario is that you need a rear brake job, and doing a brake job is still easier than continuing to tear your brakes apart to replace the hub bearings.

Loose rear wheel, believe it is the bearing. How do I repair it?


drum brakes you remove rear wheel- speed sensor-grease cap-flange nut-outer bearing-brake drum-inner grease seal-inner bearing-drive the bearing races out of the drum hub.to install -install the inner and outer bearing races.apply grease to the bearings and hub cavity.then you install the inner bearing -inner grease seal-brake drum-outer bearing-flange nut torque it to 159 to 192 ft lbs. THE REAR DISC BRAKE WHEEL BEARINGS-you have to remove rear wheel -wheel speed sensor-brake caliper and rotor-rear axle hub bolts-tone the wheel with tool 09445-21000-carrier assembly-nut after unstaking it-press out the rear axle hub-remove the bearing inner race with tool 09445-21000-remove the bushings from the carrier with tools 09453-33000b and 09545-21100.to install -press in the bushings to the carrier with tools 09453-33000b and 09545-21100- press in the bearings to the hub with tool 09221-21000.tighten the flange nut to meet the concave portion of the spindle-press in the tone wheel with tool 09221-21000-torque the nut to 191 ft lbs -install the hub and bearing assembly to the backing plate and torque the bolts to 88 ft lbs-install the brake caliper and rotor.install the wheel speed sensor if equipped.install the rear wheel.TO BUY THE TOOLS TO DO THE JOB.LOOK UP KENT MOORE TOOLS ON INTERNET.

2003 rio kia roaring noise in rear


brake drums ar faily simple to change, if u take the wheels off ul see a little centre cap, behind the cap theres a 21 mm nut, be careful not to mix up the nuts cos they are opposite threads, n/s is left hand thread.
remove the nuts (i advise replacin the nuts) then tap the drum while u spin it jus to loosen it off then jus pull it off, be careful with the bearing cos they'll fall out, IMPORTANT! when tightening the centre nuts back up they jus need to be nipped up NOT tight, jus enough to take the play out of the bearings but keep it spinning freely, when put the wheels back on make sure theres no play in it

Replacing rear wheel bearings on 1999 hyundai sonata


  1. for drum brakes with sealed hub(all one piece) remove lug nuts and wheel.
  2. spray penetrating oil around studs if there is a big phillips head screw visible remove it with impact driver/if not use big ballpeen hammer ,tap on flat of drum near studs(becareful not to hit them) until drum loosens(your creating a shockwave to loosen rust)
  3. once drum is off there are 4-bolts coming in from behind backing plate, remove them then hub should be able to be removed w/a little persuation from hammer.
with out sealed hub ,
  1. remove wheel
  2. remove dust cap,cotterpin,star washer(if equipped) do not re use cotter pin
  3. remove nut then washer, wiggle brake drum and front bearing will come out.
  4. put nut on shaft tighten 2-3 turns grab drum by sides and pull towards you this should remove drum leaving inner bearing/seal on shaft
  5. to replace reverse procedure making sure to pack new bearings w/grease(take drum and use long punch to remove bearing races, use race/seal installer to install new races
with disk brakes

  1. remove wheel
  2. remove caliper/bracket
  3. remove rotor
  4. remove 4-bolts from behind,tap old hub out
  5. reverse procedure

Toyota corolla


Remove wheel, brake cliper, cliper mounting bracket, brake pads and rotor.
Remove tie rod end and strut from spindle,
Remove large drive axle nut from center of hub by removing cotter pin and nut cover
Remove the ball joints 2 nuts and 1 bolt
Pull assy. lose from drive axle.
Take complete Hub assy with new bearing to an automotive machine shop and have them disassemble hub and replace bearing.
Reverse steps to reinstall
