Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Grumbling noise in front drivers side of car.Worst at 30-40 mph.

I own a 2000 Chevy Cavalier and I believe that the axle is going out of the drivers side because it makes a grumbling type growl on the drivers side. I know its the drivers side because i can feel it on my feet when driving. When I was riding on the front passenger side I could tell it was more to the left of me. Is this the axle going out or something else?? Any advise would help until I get it into the garage at the beginning of May. When driving at 55 mph you can still hear it but its not as loud. It sounds as if the brakes are grinding(best way of explaining the noise) but they are not its in the drivetrain of the axle somehow!! Whether pushing the gas and driving or coasting it still makes the sound. Please Help!! Any comments are appreciated!!!!

Sound more like the wheel/hub bearing. An axle will usually make a clicking noise when turning, and be quiet when going straight. It probably wont break by may but it may get louder. Get it checked asap.

I have a 2000 chevy cavalier and there is this grinding noise in the front end. it sounds like its in the middle but the noise is in perfect rotation with the tires. it just started with grinding but now...

From what you described, it sounds like you may have a CV axle going bad. The tripods are located somewhat near the center of the vehicle, near the transmission, and the fact that it gets worse in turns helps to reinforce my guess. Try this. Go into a large parking lot where you can make a minimum radius turn ( with your wheel turned as hard as it will go.) Do a few circles in each direction. If the sound gets substantially worse while turning than it is while driving straight, this is a good indicator that your CV axle is going bad. If that's the case, don't delay in getting it repaired. If it goes out, it will leave you stranded.

sounds like a possible wheel bearing issue or brake pad issue!!! i would definatly have this looked at, but in the meantime, make sure that it isnt just a backing plate contacting the rotor ...hope this was helpful!!

Grumbling Noise

yes it could cause the noise also having 80% tread is not good on the transfer case as it will constantly be putting stress on it. replace your fronts with matching tires and the noise should go away

Replacing my CV Axles

Hi, your axles on the metro are actually called half shafts, any larger name parts house can order them for you. Call them with the Make, Year, and Model and they will take care of you. you will need to tell them, drivers side or passengers side. Hope this helps!

Hub noise

You have a bad wheel bearing, when you turn away from the bad bearing the wheel bearing is un-loaded and quiets down.

I have a 1998 olds Regency frt whl drive auto trans. Do not know the trans ref like 460 e? or what.
Any how have had a frt growl, vib @ 65 mph, up and down ride at 10mph. New balanced tires replaced lh whl bearing by guess mechanic said th whl brg was ok.
Latest Son checked the drive axles for movement--there is up and dn movement @ shaft into trans end --lh & Rh side also clunkie noise. Trans seal not leaking, yet.
I suspect brgs or a bushing in trans end as it accepts the drive axle. If it the problem is it replaceable after axle removeable??
