It won't break. You can drive it to where you need to go but get that thing replaced soon....no long trips!

You have to do it from underneath and you have to have a belt tensioner tool.

Power steering went out on my 2002 pt cruiser

Please check the TYRE pressure if this seems OK then you must hoist the car and check the steering with the wheels up . If this is not found to be free the power steering section must be checked in detail starting from the drive, the hydraulics to the ball joint links. Loss of fluid or fault in pump cannot be ruled out. check the drive belt which if failed will be indicated.

Can a fanbelt be put back in place when the car is on the ground?

Yes. You have to move the plastic cover below the belts to access them. You can reach up and pull the belt down and around the upper slack adjuster to remove or replace. You might want to at least drive the van up onto a set of 4X4 lumber to give you more arm room.

An orange powersteering light came on and I can tell that the wheel is tough to turn. it has 49000 miles

Hi,
I would check to see if the fanbelt that drives your power steering pump is broken or perhaps slipping.
It's also possible that your power steering fluid reservoir is empty or low. Under the hood look for a small pump that is driven by a fanbelt. The lid of the unit should say something like Power Steering fluid or something similar. Undo the cap and check the fluid level when the engine is turned off.
If fluid and belt drive is OK, then its possible your power steering pump is broken.
Cheers,
Steve

How do you put on a timing belt for a 2002 pt

hi from uk could you please verify ? you intend to diy cambelt change ? also has belt been removed already ? or has belt failed/broken ? the belt change is not too difficult to change/renew and is advisable to renew belt and tensioner and the water pump too as it is driven by c/belt to eliminate having to strip down again in near future due to possible pump faiure/leaking ? belt replacement is approx120'000miles or 8 years service ? however if belt has failed ?? then as this engine is what is known as interferance this means there will be piston/s to valves contact resulting in possible valves damage/bent ? the renewal of c/belt etc should take approx 3 hrs if you are confident/tooled and would save $$$$

Is it ok if the belt i get for my car is a bit tighter than the stock. i have upgraded alternator pulley so i got 1 but its really tight and the tensioner is all the way down holding the belt tight ......

It'll be fine....the only thing would be to check it often. A tighter belt will often wear a little quicker than a properly fitting one.....by the way, you want a belt that is tight rather than a loose one. The only problem having an extremely tight or overly tight belt is it can put undo wear on pulley bearings.

2002 pt cruiser just turned off on the high way

ok i have seen this problem a lot in the last few years with these cars and every time it is the same thing. Check the timing belt, for some reson there was a bad batch of belts that were put on these cars and the belts start to split apart and alow the car to jump timing buy one or two teeth and it will chut the car down. if the belt is in any way torn or fraid then you have one of the bad belts so you will need to replace it and it will solve your problems..
