Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

1999 Grand Prix 3.1 V6 having problems with the cooling system, the low coolant light comes on even after fluid is put in, while driving it sometimes runs on the hotter side however if I idle too long it tends to heat up quickly and if I dont get moving it will go all the way into the red. I have had it stall at redlights as well. I am now leaking fluid and not sure where its coming from or why. I had the water pump replaced and not sure what else I should do.

Sounds like you might have air in the system, when cooled loosen the rad cap but not completely and run the engine until the fan comes on run for another 2-3 minutes then CAREFULLY with a rag remove the rad cap, Don't worry it was loose and won't be under pressure, check fluid level in rad as well as in over flow reservoir if low fill to proper level.

Sounds like you have air in your coolant system. Take it to a mechanic shop to have them bleed the cooling system. That should cure your problem. Hope this helps. :) Please rate this. James Booth

1998 grand prix low coolant light keeps coming on thermostat, hoses, radaitor, and intake gaskits have been replaced...the radaitor is full everytime i check it

If the engine is running well and not running hot, chances are that the coolant level sensor has failed. You can either replace it or ignore the warning light and just check the level as "routine maintenance"
while checking your oil and other fluids weekly as every good vehicle owner does and has done since there were cars to drive.

Hey guys, i am no mechanic not even close, but my pontiac grand prix se 4-dr automatic with 6cyl, has been acting strange when i first start it and drive it maybe 30 min the low coolent light comes on and...

The first things to do are: 1. Make sure the radiator is full when the engine is cool (check the fluid in the radiator as well as the overflow tank). 2. Make sure the thermostat is working. 3. Have the lower intake manifold gasket checked. The Grand Prix SE came with a 3.1L engine (standard) and these engines are famous for lower intake manifold gasket problems.

Why my low coolant light comes on at time. but its not low on coolant. i just put a new water pump on.

CHECK COOLANT OVER FLOW RESERVOIR MAKE SURE IT HAS COOLANT IF YES.YOU COULD HAVE A FAULTY COOLANT LEVEL SENSOR IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW RESERVOIR. CHECK TO MAKE SURE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR STILL INTACT.LIGHTLY TAP WITH THE HEAD OF A SCREW DRIVER BELOW COOLANT LOW LEVEL SENSOR BOTTOM OF COOLANT RESERVOIR.IF LOW COOLANT LIGHT GOES OUT COOLANT SENSOR PROBABLY STUCK IF LIGHT STAYS ON COOLANT LOW LEVEL SENSOR BAD.

My 1999 grand prix stalls and dies at stops.

My Pontiac Grand Prix is also a 99, it has 216,+ thousand miles on it, it runs great, idles good, I need to replace the oxygen sensor tho as it shuts off on me while driving or sometimes coming to a stop. You might try checking the fuel filter and pump as well.

Put in new radiator, and sensor, but low coolant light still is on?

The low coolant light may not turn off immediately, it may take several cycles of running the vehicle and turning it off before the OBDII system "decides" that the condition no longer exists.

How do you reset the low radiator fluid light on the dash? Fluid res. was low. I re filled but lite won't go out.

There is no reset button. When you fill it up it should just go out. What happens is the sensor is at the bottom of the fill bottle and all the dirt and junk is at the bottom.Sometimes the sensor is on the radiator. It is directly below filler neck of the radiator.Drain enough coolant to lower the level of the radiator and remove the metal retainer from the sensor.Remove the sensor and install a new one in.Refill the radiator. The light should be off.Make sure the vehicle is cooled down when working on the cooling system.

1996 Pontiac Grand prix Coolant problem.

The car came with GM dexcool in it and was mixed with a noncompatable antifreeze. You need to flush to entire cooling system including the heater core. Any Certified shop can handle this job and recycle the used fluid. As for the Ck engine light only a scan can tell you if it is related or not.

I got a 1997 pontiac grand prix gtp coupe. the low coolant light constantly flashes. the coolant fluids are full. i just bought it and i am a little frustrated.

Sometimes the float in the low coolant sensor gets stuck.Find where the electrical connector is on the overflow tank and lightly tap on this area. This might dislodge it,if its stuck.Good Luck!!!
