Sounds like you might have air in the system, when cooled loosen the rad cap but not completely and run the engine until the fan comes on run for another 2-3 minutes then CAREFULLY with a rag remove the rad cap, Don't worry it was loose and won't be under pressure, check fluid level in rad as well as in over flow reservoir if low fill to proper level.
