The spring is likely "broken" because the pins in the bushings are worn. It's a common failure point on many GM vehicles. The hinge pins, bushings door check roller and spring can be replaced at most body shops for about $150-200.

Passenger door on driver's side won't latch

Inspect and lubricate latch. If it has a broken spring inside, latch may have to be replaced. This is unlikely as the driver's door is the one that usually gets the most use. Check for something preventing door from shutting all the way, such as bad weather stripping, body damage, bad hinge or seat belt in the jamb-ha ha.

Why are the hinge pin holes ablong on my gmc jimmy?

the doors are heavy and from wear and tear the circular holes become oblong. you can purchase a replacement set of door pins and bushings from autozone to repair the oblong holes and the door misalignment.

How to remove door bushings

The only door bushings I am aware of are the ones on the hinge pins. Correct? If not, please clarify what you mean.
New pins come with new bushings, and the hinges are welded on so the pins are pretty much the only items replaceable. Not a fun job - because of the door stop springs you will need a spring compressor, and you will also need a special tool to drive out the old pins. However, both are available from a parts store or Amazon.
Just open the door and support it from the bottom, and then go for it, one pin at a time - for the upper pin, compress and remove the small spring, drive out the old pin, drive in the new pin and put the spring back. No spring on the bottom hinge - just replace the pin.

Driverside door coming off or hanging low. big spring came out of door hing. back window hath won't lock.how do i fix rear driverside roter and caliper (replace). thanks

the door problem sounds like the door pins and bushings are worn out. this should be fixed asap because if it is let go the pin will cut into the hinge itself and then they may also need replaced. hope this helps!

I have a 98 gmc jimmy. The bushings on the door hinge are worn. Is there a trick or special tool for compressing the spring on upper hinge to get the pin out?

I USE A PRY BAR TO GET THEM OUT. GETTING THE SPRING BACK IN DOES CALL FOR A SPRING COMPRESSOR. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET ONE FROM A AUTO PARTS STORE, MAC TOOLS OR SNAP ON TOOLS.
