Question about Oldsmobile Bravada

Can't find the correct rotor position. Lower timing mark on crankshaft is lined up with notch. Rotor is pointing to #1 plug; still will not fire. Sprayed ether , changed plugs still no start ; what is correct firing order?

What year is the vehicle and what is the engine size? You mention rotor position, but you also mention crankshaft. Do you need timing info or distributor alignment?

    No, you were very clear in your reqest and I provided the ignition alignment @ top dead center with #1 piston. Are you able to perform the engine cylinder on #1 to top dead center? If not, then my efforts are fruitless.

Where is the rotory button suppose to be pointing when the number 1 piston is up for a 1980 chevy luv


When #1 piston is up the rotor can be pointing to 2 different places. For every 1 turn on the crankshaft the camshaft turns 2 times. To be sure that the rotor is in the right position to fire #1 spark plug you need to remove the valve cover and watch the valves as you turn the engine. To be correctly positioned the intake valves have to be open and stasrting to close as you turn the crank to align the timing marks (TDC). As you pass TDC the intake valves are closed and the exhaust valves start to open. Back up so the timing marks line up and this is where the rotor is going to fire #1. If this is not what you are seeing, then simply rotate the engine 1 complete turn and you should see it happen then.

Unless you have changed the timing chain or removed the distributor this shouldn't be necessary.Perhaps if you suspect the truck has "jumped her time" then this could help to confirm. If you are doing routine maintenance, plugs, wires, cap and rotor then you don't need to be concerned that the timing marks line up but not the rotor button. Hope this helps.

when you install the distributor the rotor button should point at the # 1 plug wire on the distributor cap make sure you are on the compression stroke of the motor when doing this you can verify that you are on the compression stroke by removing the #1 spark plug and turning the engine over while holding your fingure over the spark plug hole it will push your finger off the hole you need to spin the engine .spin the engine over slow while doing this so you don,t pass the timing mark on the harmonic balancer.

How do i install a distributor to a nissan pick up


It is necessary to place the No. 1 cylinder in the firing position to correctly install the distributor. To locate this position, the ignition timing marks on the crankshaft front pulley are used.

Remove the No. 1 cylinder spark plug. Turn the crankshaft until the piston in the No. 1 cylinder is moving up on the compression stroke. This can be determined by placing your thumb over the spark plug hole and feeling the air being forced out of the cylinder. Stop turning the crankshaft when the timing marks indicate TDC or 0.

Oil the distributor housing lightly where the distributor bears on the cylinder block.

Install the distributor so that the rotor, which is mounted on the shaft, points toward the No. 1 spark plug terminal tower position when the cap is installed. Of course you won't be able to see the direction in which the rotor is pointing if the cap is on the distributor. Lay the cap on the top of the distributor and make a mark on the side of the housing just below the No.1 spark plug terminal plug terminal. Make sure that the rotor points toward that mark when you install the distributor. On the VG30i, align the mark on the distributor shaft with the protruding mark on the housing.

When the distributor shaft has reached the bottom of the hole, move the rotor back and forth slightly until the driving lug on the end of the shaft enter the slots cut in the end of the oil pump shaft and the distributor assembly slides down into place.

When the distributor is correctly installed, the breaker points should be in such a position that they are just ready to break contact with each other or a lobe of the reluctor is aligned with the stator contact. This is accomplished by rotating the distributor body after it has been installed in the engine. Once again, line up the marks that you made before the distributor was removed from the engine. On the VG30i, the distributor rotor should be in the 11:25 o'clock position (between 11 and 12 o'clock).
  1. Install the distributor hold-down bolt.
  2. Install the spark plugs.
  3. Install the cap, primary wire, and vacuum line(s).
  4. Install the spark plug leads. Consult the marks made during removal to be sure that the proper lead goes to each plug. Install the high tension wire if it was removed.
  5. Start the engine. Check the timing and adjust it if necessary.

The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these procedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on TDC. (Top Dead Center) This "Static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at TDC.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing (usually has a #6 for 6 cylinder engines or a #8 for 8 cylinder engines) indicating the number one TDC alignment position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one TDC alignment mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to and aligned with the TDC alignment mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be "Static" timed. (The more precise that you are aligning the TDC alignment mark with the ignition rotor the better the engine will run, and it will be less likely that there will be a camshaft to crankshaft correlation problem)

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

Here is a firing order diagram to also help assist you.

Some distributors have the hold down bracket secured onto the distributor housing and the distributor can not be turned into alignment and then tightened down into that position, and these distributors will only fit into the engine and correctly align on "Static" timing one certain way, and when it is correct the distributor hold down bracket bolt can be installed and the TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing will remain properly aligned with the ignition rotor.

How to remove distributor on a 1998 gmc pick up with 5.0 engine, do I have to mark anything or just take off bolt and pull out.


You need to mark in 2 places. With the cap off mark the position of the rotor button on the distributor housing first. Then you need to make a mark on the distributor housing that will line up with a mark on the engine itself.
When you put the distributor back in back the rotor button up before you put it in because the cam gear will turn it ahead as it seats. For example, if the rotor button is at 3 o'clock then back it up to 1 o;clock.
Don't force the distributor down at the end because you can damage the end that drives the oil pump. Fidle and wiggle it as you push and it should line up and drop onto the oil pump. Also DON'T turn the engine over while it's out or you will have to retime the engine. Hope this helps.

Cylinder #1 at top dead center. Mark on the camshaft gear is straight up,as referenced to engine. Note that the engine tilts to the rear so reference the flat line of the head for 12'oclock positioning of cam timing mark.Distributor rotor points to #1 cylinder. If you have crankshaft pulley off, and can see the timing mark there, it should be straight down with #1 at TDC. After reassembly, start engine and jumper E1 and TE1 in the diagnostics box. This gives a smooth steady idle. Use timing light pointed at crankshaft pulley and hooked to #1 cylinder spark plug wire to check. Loosen distributor's 2 mounting bolts enough to turn it. Adjust as necessary. If you are having trouble seeing the notch on the crank pulley, get a white paint pen to increase it's visibility. Reference the rotating pulley mark to the stationary mark on the lower timing belt cover.
