Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab

1 Answer

2 problems. first problem, once the truck is started it won't shift out of park. i have to shut it off and shift into neutral and start it again and then shift into gear. second problem, the truck sounds like its missing and then it sputters badly when accelerating. hooked it up to a computer and it said number 4 plug wasn't firing. i replaced all the plugs and plug wires and still got the same problem. replaced the coils and it still didn't work.any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The shifter problem sounds like the shift interlock is not releasing, check to see if your brake lights work, if not probably a fuse or brake light switch. Your misfire could be a bad injector or no compression in cyl 4. You probably had code P0304, which indicated a misfire on #4 not nessessarily a spark issue. Sounds like you covered the spark side of it. Pull the plug and check compression then check to see if the injector is working.

The neutral switch is loose or needs adjusting. Sometimes you can hold the shift lever hard in the park position and it will start.

Automatic transmission won t shift

you need to replace the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH (some people call it a PRNDL Switch. Once you get it aligned correctly, all will be well. Install it in Neutral with the Shift indicator in Neutral. Tighten the Bolts and make sure the Park indicator is in Park and the movement of the Cable is correct. you may have to make multiple attempts to get it right.

Where is the neutral saftey switch on an 2004 chevy cavalier

It should start in neutral position. Neutral safety switch is usually located under the shift console by the shift lever.

1997 Carolla- engine dies when shift to reverse or drive, starts again when put in park. Is this a transmission problem or starter/ignition problem?

There is a switch that only only allows you to start the engine in Park or Neutral. It sounds as if yours is faulty or has a bad connection. Finding it will be the problem.

Sound like a problem with the Neutral Ssafety Switch, this is located on top transmission (generally) and its possible that need some adjust.

Car won't shift out of park

It osunds like the shift interlock solenoid is not unlocking when you step on the brake, do you hear a click nosie?

Try the emergency bypass. turn key to OFF, step on brake, shift out of park into neutral. Then start car and drive away. do not put back in park until you get to destination. Or you will have to shut off, turn key to OFF, and apply brake, and shift to neutral again.

report back. check all fuses. see chart in owner manaul

2007 dodge caravan, won't start at first. I leave it and fiddle with the gear shift and finally it starts. Runs no problem, shut it off and it restarts. Noticed that the gear shift light shows reverse when...

Sounds like the shifter linkage needs adjusted. There is a neutral saftey switch that prevents the car from being started in any foward or reverse gear. If the shifter linkage is out of adjustment, the neutral safety switch will give you starting problems.
