Question about Mazda Navajo

2 Answers

I was stopped at a traffic light. When I went to step on the gas my transmission slipped out of gear. I tried to shift it into all of the other gears but it still would not move. I tried to use the four wheel drive both high and low but still no response. I then purchased some dextron III and added it to the fluid but no response. There is not any fluid on the ground either. the fluid looked very clean when I checked it. Would a vacuum or computer module cause this problem? Does it have either? When I shift it to park the park pin still engages and holds the car from rolling. Couild it be a dirty filter? There was not any problem with this vehicle pryor to this incident. I am totally confused. The car is a 1992 Mazda Navajo LX automatic four wheel drive with an automatic transmission.

I towed the car home. Then I jacked it up and checked for vacuum leak. I did not find one. Then I had someone sit in the car and shift it while I looked at the connections. Everything seemed to be tight and working fine. what else could it be?

I did not find a problem with this so I checked the linkage by having someone shift the car into the various car positions while I checked underneath the vehicle. Everything was operating as it should be. What should I check next?

Hmmmm. You may want to have the OBD codes checked to see if you have a bad shift solenoid.

The other bad news is....if the car doesnt use electronically controlled shift solenoids your probably just have worn out friction plates. Which means its time for an expensive rebuild or a new unit.

How many miles on this truck? Was this the only time it slipped out of gear?

Hi,
There could actually be a large number of problems with your transmission fault. I will go through a couple you could check.
1. Check that vacum line to the actuator on the transmision is ok and not leaking.
2. Check gear selector switch attached to the side of the transmission the plug may have come off.
3. Check linkage to the switch is not broken and may not be engaging the switch.

If these are ok then you may have a electrical switching fault in the transmission or have a hydraulic modulator problem in the transmission.

Let me know what you find and ask me if you require further information

thanks

Jason

I don't think overheating of the engine has much to do with the transmission, either automatic or manual. If you have an automatic transmission, did you check the fluid? Sometimes low fluid stops certain gears from changing, as the torque converter doesn't have enough fluid to pressurize the servos to engage the clutches.

Why does my 1995 Volvo transmission stop going into gear after it's hot?

1) How's your fluid level?

2) When did you last replace your filter?

3) When it shifted, did it go trough all the gears as you accelerate or did it just stay on one gear and never shifted?

4) How's reverse, does it slip out too after 2 - 3 min?

5) As you first able to shift into gear, you can drive it for 2 to 3 mintues and it just suddenly slip out of gear?

.... could be a number of different things. Maybe even burnt out clutche(s) inside your transmission

What causes 1996 Dodge Neon SOHC automatic transmission to delay or slip shifts?

that is a hum dinger, largest ever posted, in one shot.
very good.!
one word , the transmission slips. (never drive a slipping tranny)
overheat indicator.! that is key.
many newer cars will change the transmission shifting any time
the engine over heats.
and overheat wins over transmission , every time.
if the engine burns up, what good is any transmission.? nada.

solve overheat first.

slip or flare.
is when the engine RPM rises fast and the car dont go faster.
SLIPS.
and slipping burns up trannyclutchs and increases the damage. inside the transmission, dont do that. dont allow it,
park it and fix it.

on some tranny there is a temperature sensor that the TCM
watches and changes shift patterns based on AFT fluid temps.
and if the ATF fluid gets too hot , it takes actions. to keep the tranny from harm.

why not get a scan too and see what DTC errors there are..
DTC, engine overheate.
DTC< tranny overheat (caused by above)

Transmission not shiftin

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

TRANSMISSION GEARS SLIPPING AND FLUID LEAKING ISSUES

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

There are few very helpful links with solutions to troubleshoot this problem.

Check the oil levels in the transmission, if it is low, this will stop the gears engaging, hence not driving at all, this is a safety mechanism on the transmission, DO NOT OVER FILL IT WITH OIL, this will destroy the transmission

Trans shifts very hard after 5 minutes of stop and go traffic

A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.

Some possibilties, not all!
