Question about 1989 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1993 jeep cherokee and the heater control panel will only blow air through the window defrost outlet no matter where I set the control ( ie vent, heat, combo ). I would like to know what the actual cause of this problem is and what has to be done to fix it. I suspect it is the control panel? but when I looked at it, there are a number of hoses producing a vacuum for each of the different settings. Is it the unit that creates the vacuum? What is that and where is it located? Can you help me?

It sounds like it has no vacuum. With no vacuum to the door motors it defaults to defrost. Check for unhooked vacuum lines on the engine.

The Heater selector won't change from defrost to any other settings like floor heat or straight from the dash . the switch on the dash moves but the heat only comes from the defrost vents in the dashboard

hello, sounds like the cable broke or, lots of newer veichels use air lines, any way possible, check and see if air lines are still hooked up to the back of the heater controls, should be 4or 5 air lines together, all hook on one place behind heater controlls

Heater only blows cold air and only out the window defrost. need to know how to change to get hot air? what to do to get floor and defrost would be nice also. This is a 1988 jeep cherokee 4.0 Thank you!

Make sure there is vacuum going to the heater box servo motors and the temp control. If you have a good vac signal then either the servo has failed or a plenum door is stuck. If there is no vacuum then check at the control and at the engine and trace to find reason.

AC goes through the defroster.

You have a vacuum leak to your heater controls. Find the leak, and it will fix your problem.

Check the control cable that operates the diverter door in the heater box at both ends, to make sure that it operates the door when you move the control lever.

Heater not working

First check the heat control lever from on end to the other. Now this noise really 'sounds' like a mouse has made a nest inside the heater ducts. Or the flip door near the heater fan is out of place. It wouldn't hurt to flush the heater rad. Frankster016
