Question about 2002 Ford F150 Regular Cab

Open Question

2002 f150 w 5.4 power steering fluid leaking from alum tube coming out of the bottom...looked like easy fix...remove threaded flange replace o ring replace flange...Not enough room to get a wrench to loosen flange...blocked by cross member?

Normally if dont see it while its running and your underneath or looking under the truck, its probably only occurring when the system which could me a seal at the pump. Have you tried having someone turn the wheel hard left and hard right while you are looking for the leak?

all the boot does is keep dirt from getting to the lip seal if its leaking youl atleast need to replace seal and boot i think on that model youl need a specialty inner tie rod tool to remove before you can get the seal out. if it was me i believe id replace the whole rack if you plan on keeping the rig long hope this helps please rate me thanks

Nothing will happen. Power steering fluid is what you should have used. ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid.This fluid is more intended where friction qualities are needed.It will work, but power steering fluid is better for the pump and hoses and gives the rack and pinion a better lubrication the ATF.Don't worry you are fine as it is.

Ive made do with what i can many times, When i was stuck on the side of the road 100+ miles from home with a broken timing belt i used my power steering belt wraped around it self and hooked to another pulley to crack that dam thing free!!

If you can do it with out fing up the four threaded holes then do it,, You may need the four threaded holes in good condition in the next step, when you need a puller to get the pulley off.

Bleed power steering on 2008 dodge avenger


to bleed power steering, with front wheels off ground slightly with front wheels pointing straight ahead.engine off. remove power steering filler cap.add power steering until fluid level stop dropping,wait couple minutes and wait, add fluid until level stay at full cold mark on power steering cap dip stick. dont over fill.when fluid level stop dropping, start vechicle,let it idle few minutes. see if fluid level drop if so add more fluid full cold mark.then turn steering all the way to left and right with out hitting a stop.turn steering wheel several times, then turn front wheels pointing forward check power steering fluid level.if power steering fluid level stop dropping air should be out of system, if steering turning wheel dont turn smoothly and power steering fluid look light tan color air getting in the system.check all power steering lines to rack and power steering pump for leaks.be sure you replaced all the power steering lines with new o rings if not you will get a leak.if you find a leak, you need to fix the leak and bleed system again.dont drive vechicle if your steering dont feel right,have vechicle towed to a garage.

Chevrolet Cavaliers have power steering installed as standard equipment. The power steering is assisted with hydraulic pressure generated by the power steering pump. The pump circulates the fluid and makes turning the steering wheel very light and responsive to the touch. A sure sign the power steering pump is failing is when steering becomes more laborious; also look for leaking power steering fluid puddled under the car. Removing a power steering pump is not a difficult project and is the first step to repairing the power steering system.

    • The serpentine belt on the front of the Cavalier's engine provides the power to operate the power steering pump. You have to first remove the belt to free the power steering pump's drive pulley. Underneath the Cavalier is a spring-tensioned pulley keeping the serpentine belt taut. Use a socket wrench to grab the center hex nut on the tension pulley and turn it so the belt becomes loose. Remove the belt from the pulley and then from the other wheels and pulleys on the engine.

    Tubing
    • A tube runs from the pump to the power steering assist mechanism in the Cavalier near the front axle. This hard tube has two fittings on each end for a connection. Use a box-end wrench to disconnect one end of the tube underneath the Cavalier. Be careful because some power steering fluid will leak. Just hold your finger over the hole and set a container underneath the tube and wait for the fluid to drain.

      Once the fluid finishes draining use the box-end wrench to disconnect the tube from the power steering pump. The tube is bent and twists to make its way through the engine bay from the pump to the power steering assist. There's no need to remove it from the bay. Just push it aside.

    Pump
    • The power steering pump is bolted directly onto the engine block. To remove the pump, unscrew the fasteners securing it to the engine. There may or may not be thread lock compound used to seal the bolts onto the engine. If the bolts do not easily turn use some force to break the thread lock. Do not worry about doing this. Breaking thread lock is the only way to get a bolt free. Once the bolts are out, lift the pump out of the engine bay. Again, though, be careful because as you move the pump some remaining power steering fluid may drain from the access port where the tubing was connected. You might want to get a shop towel to hold over the port when moving the pump to avoid a dripping mess.

I have power steering fluid leaking from the sensor's plug-in to the power steering pump. Where the 2 wires connect into the housing. Is it the pressure sensor? If so, how do I fix it?


TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH.REMOVE SIPHON OUT POWER STEERING FLUID BELOW THE PRESSURE SWITCH.UNSCREW THE OLD PRESSURE SWITCH AND SCREW IN THE NEW POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH.MAKE PRESSURE SWITCH HAS THREAD SEALER ON IT.IF NEW PRESSURE SWITCH THREADS ALREADY HAVE SEALER ON THE THREAD DONT NEED TO USE TEFLON TAPE TO SEAL THE THREADS.BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM.

Replace high pressure power steering hose


Very easy job.Replacement part from auto parts store ran me $13.99, and had the o-rings with it. You will need an 18mm open end wrench and I found that the 5/8's actually worked better on the other end. First use a turkey baster to remove the fluid from the reservoir to help with excess leakage. Place a drip pan under the power steering unit. Remove the bottom line fitting first which will help with drainage without extra splashing. Remove top fitting after the unit has drained. Put o-rings on the ends of the new hose after moistening with new power steering fluid.Replace hose with the new one tightening to 35-50 # pressure ( Hand tight should be fine.) Fill unit with NEW power steering fluid and start engine. Turn wheel completely from side to side a few times to allow fluid to replace air in the line.Check for leaks at connection. Turn vehicle off and wait about 15 minute and repeat wheel turning process again with engine running to remove excess air. If you find no leaks then you should be just fine. I completed in about 20 minutes and I am just a shade tree mechanic. Good luck.

2000 dakota sport leaks power steering fluid where high pressure line connects to pump. i have replaced the o ring and it slowed it down but did not stop it. I have replaced the o ring twice. What next?


Try some teflon tape on threaded end of hose where o ring went. Also look closely at compression fitting where hose and metal crimp meets, they can leak there. Have seen that on occasion.

I have a leak coming from my power steering, and i dont know how to check and see where the leak is and what to look for.


There are two lines coming out of the back of the power steering pump. One is the high pressure line and threaded into the pump. The other is the return line, and has a metal tube coming out of the back of the pump. There should be a short rubber hose connecting this tube with another metal line that goes to the steering box. There are two metal lines threaded into the top of the steering box. The steering box is located at the end of the steering column and is bolted to the drivers side frame rail at the front of the vehicle. You will have to remove the left front tire to access these fittings. The rubber hose will be attached with hose clamps and are prone to leak. To tighten the threaded fittings, you will need a 16mm open end wrench, or preferably a flare nut wrench of the same size.

How to change the thermostat


This is for the 2.7L:

2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.

    CAUTION

    Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.

  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove radiator lower hose from thermostat housing.
  4. Remove nuts from heater tube flange studs.
  5. Loosen starter bolt at heater tube bracket.
  6. Pull heater tube out of thermostat housing and position out of the way.
  7. Remove bolt and two studs.
  8. Remove thermostat housing, O-ring and thermostat.
  9. Remove thermostat housing bolts.

To install:

  1. Clean gasket sealing surfaces.

    NOTE

    Install thermostat with the bleed valve located at the 12 o'clock position, between tabs on seal.

  2. Install thermostat and seal into thermostat housing .
  3. If removed, install two studs.
  4. Install thermostat, thermostat housing and O-ring and bolt. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.(12 Nm).
  5. Lubricate new heater return tube O-ring with coolant.
  6. Position heater return tube flange over two studs. Install nuts.
  7. Tighten retaining nuts to 53 inch lbs.(6 Nm).
  8. Tighten starter bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54.3 Nm).
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Install hose clamps.
  10. Refill cooling system.
  11. Inspect for leaks.
  12. Connect negative cable.
This is for the 3.2L and the 3.5L:

3.2L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Disconnect negative cable.

    CAUTION

    Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.

  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  4. Disconnect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  5. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from thermostat housing.
  6. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
  7. Remove housing, thermostat, and gasket.

    NOTE

    The OEM thermostat is staked in place at the factory. To ensure proper seating of replacement thermostat, carefully remove the bulged metal from the thermostat housing using a suitable hand held grinder. It is not necessary to restake the replacement thermostat into the thermostat housing.

To install:

  1. Position gasket on thermostat and housing.
  2. Install thermostat housing, gasket and mounting bolts onto block. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install radiator hose.
  4. Install bypass hose.
  5. Connect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  6. Connect negative cable.
  7. Fill cooling system.
  8. Inspect for leaks.
  9. Lower vehicle on hoist.

SOUND LIKE POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE LEAKING.COPPER TUBING IS TOO SOFT METAL FOR POWER STEERING AND BRAKES SYSTEM.BUY A PRESSURE HOSE AT ANY AUTO PARTS PLACES LIKE AUTO ZONE OR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS. PRESSURE HOSE SHOULD HAVE O-RING COME WITH IT.

My 04 volvo xc90 leaking power steering fluid at night


I have the same problem with 05 XC90 2.5T.. It seems like there is a problem with the power steering pump. And the only way to fix it is to change the pump. Now i'm trying to use the lucas stop leaking thing as well and will see what happens.

I need to rplace tke power steering hose on a 2000 kia sephia


we tried fixing the old power steering hose, finally just had it taken off and another made up by an auto shop, cost $65 to have one made. very easy to fix, just undo at each end. this is a pressure hose though so make sure and get the same kind made.
