Question about 1985 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

Fuel Injection Problem

1985 Lincoln Town Car with a Ford 302 5.0liter V-8

My engine will only stay on if I work the gas pedal. Not just applying more gas, but Working the gas pedal if I try to keep it in one position the engine dies. There is no fuel pressure problem. The fuel pump works fine and the fuel filter is not clogged. The throttle body is getting fed fuel. There is also spark, plenty of it. I started the engine and fed fuel to the throttle body through an IV type thing that I made and the engine ran perfectly. Since there is spark and fuel is being fed to the throttle body it means there is something wrong with the electronic fuel injection system.

The engine is fed by two fuel injectors through a throttle body. When the car first stopped working there was an electrical short somewhere. The front, left turning signal light blew and the dashboard light fuse blew. Again I can keep the engine running only if I work the gas pedal or else it shuts off. I also have narrowed it down to the fuel injection system.

I'm good with cars but I'm new to fuel injection systems. I just ordered a manual for my car so I could get a wiring diagram. I need someone to point me to the right direction. Where do I start first? What Should I test first, and How?

Is your cat. convertor blocking up? If it is this condition, it could very well be the problem. Disconnect the convertor start the car & see if it takes the gas well. If it does, change the cat. convertor. Good luck!

Lincoln 2000 town car was seated for a year was running fine now will crank over but wont start acts like no fuel but fuel pump is working

You need to Change your Fuel Filter its under the car on the passanger side, it has easy disconnects on it, get a new one, lift it up, make sure you put stops around all wheels, because it could fall if it goes forward. The filter is 8 dollars at advanced, then it should fire right, up. No its not a catalitic converter, That car will be solid in the engine department untill at least 230,000 miles. Engine Won't Stay Running

I have never seen one outside the distributor. Yeah that changes things that you can keep it running applying gas. So

Have you checked the air filter? A plugged filter will do this as well as a partialy plugged fuel filter. Take the air filter out and knock it against some thing to get the extra crud off it, You should be able to point it at the sun or a light sorce and light should be trying to filter through. If if is dark then replce it, You can try to start it with the filter out for a few minutes but some engines are controlled by the vucuum and it may not work well unless the filter is in it. Just try it and see if it helps. Remember I am trying to give you standard things to trouble shoot that is basic for all vehicles so know that I am unfamiliar with your engine type. Just trying to get lucky here.
Does yours have fuel injection or caburetor type? Either/Or, there should be a screw there someplace that you can adjust the idle to higher rpms to get you by until you can locate the problem. You can also take the fuel pump off and blow through it with a paper towel in your hand to catch the junk and crud. Remeber to note which way it came off. It needs to go back the same way. Some you can only put on one way. If it looks like a lot came out the consider replacing it but try it again first to see how it runs now. Of course in little or nothing came out just replace it.
I also might consider a ful tune up. Spark plugs, and rotor and cap.
Let me know if any of these things did the trick but to be honest, I don't know where else to help you after this with out being there and seeing for myself. I would rather you left no thumbs at all if i was no help or a thumbs up for trying. I still need to keep my score up. Thanks and keep me informed, Raz

What does it means when i press the accelarator i smell gas and my car is a 1985 lincoln town car?

If you are smelling gas then one of two things is wrong. You either have a fuel leak or the engine is running with an overly rich fuel/air mixture.
