Question about 1984 Chevrolet Corvette

2 Answers

I have a 1984 corvette. If I jump it , it will start and within 10 seconds shuts off. My brother said the radio would not shut off so he pulled what he called a relay. I can not find a relay any where on this car! He said not a fuse but a relay. Even if I find this "relay" any have any ideas why the radio would not cut off and drain the battery????

Do you mean if you jump start the car and take the jumpers off while your car is still running it will die in about ten seconds?

I don't know if you have fuel injection or just an electric fuel pump and carb, because they had both in 1984. But regardless they both had a fuel pump relay. And that is probably what your brother removed.

But there are many locations so I can't help in detail. There is one by the battery, one on the firewall, and one near the firewall. I don't believe any are inside the car.

Start with the battery and have it tested for integrity. Make sure it has good standing(12.5v) voltage and good cranking voltage(the battery voltage should not drop below 10.5 volts). If the battery drops during cranking, either the starter has an issue internally or (most likely;) the battery has a short internally and should be replaced whether it is new or not. When the power source has been deemed good, have the charging system tested for anything above 13.7 volts(these should have right around 14.5v). If this is good, let me know and we can troubleshoot elsewhere.

There is a series of two videos addressing a very similar problem with a 1989 Corvette, first one diagnosis, second one fix. Seems like this is a not unusual problem for these older Corvettes. Check out the links.

1984 RABBIT GTI FUEL PUMP KICKS ON AND OFF

You had a missing relay before? To operate the pump you'd jump the perpendicular connections. As for the relay running briefly, that sounds like it could be a worn out ignition switch.

How to turn off change oil light on 2001 Corvette

Unless there is something wrong with you buttons the procedure is as follows:
1. Turn ignition key to ON (not start)
2. Press ENG MET button on trip monitor & release, then press it again within 5 seconds.
3. Within 5 seconds again press and hold GAUGES button until Change Oil lamp flashes.
4. Continue Holding Gauges button until lamp stops flashing & goes out.
5. You should be done, start & shut off car. If it didn't work turn off car and start from top.

Some buttons are very sensitive so try and be deliberate & steady when holding.

If that helps please rate my answers!
