On the back of the gage cluster is a soldered potentiometer that looses contact over many years. Radio shack sells a dielectric compound that can be poured onto it to recontact it low voltage connection.

How do I fix the fuel gauge on a 2001 Lincoln Navigator truck?

How do you know it is the fuel gauge? it could be the fuel level inside the fuel tank. Please give more information. You are not getting a reading? drop tank and the fuel lever is located ontop of the tank. put an ohm meter across the wires to see if the fuel lever is working. take the fuel lever out of the tank and inspect. Be carefull not to smoke or create a spark while working on the gas tank.

The gas gauge doesn't give me the correct reading on how much fuel is in my tank.

that old of a car it would be best to replace the fuel pump and the sending unit at the same time in the gas tank. please be safe and good luck..

My fuel gauge starts showing empty and dings when i know the fuel is full in a 2000 dodge intrepid. What needs fixed, gauge or sensor? If it is the sensor where is that located?

The fuel tank has the Rheostat that has a float and on which the float moves up to change the resistance to the gauge which is a volt meter.
So you need to locate the fuel tank to see the fittings here, removal of the wires to the rheostat will change the fuel readings, so as to confirm the gauge.
If so remove rheostat and move float on the outside with the connection of ground and lead externally to confirm as you will notice the change on the meter.

On my 2001 GMC jimmy sls, when the fuel guage gets near half full it drops to empty and lately when really full it reads empty until a few gallons are gone. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

you probably have a bad fuel level sensor in the fuel tank.you will have to remove the fuel tank to replace the sensor.the contacts on the sensor will break causing the fuel gauge to be inacurate.you can buy the sensor without having to buy the whole fuel pump assembly.

Fuel gauge not working

Please check cables for loose connection. Otherwise the problem is on your fuel sensor. A defective fuel sensor needs replacement.

Check for moiosture or corrosion around the tank sender unit connections- if all ok there, you may need a new fuel sender unit.

Myptrol sensor is dirty, how can i clean it up,shows inacurate petrol reading

It's simply a float attached to the sending unit in the fuel tank. Depending on the make it will have several different forms, but there will be no mistaking it. If your gauge always shows the tank on empty, check the connections going to your fuel tank first before attempting removal of the sending unit. Please take caution if you do need to pull the sending unit and run all the petrol from your car until it dies. Hope this helps!

I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?
