Electrical Problem??? My neighbor has been trying to resolve an (I suppose) electrical problem with his 1997 XJ6. The problem is...The engine starts and runs beautiful for a minute or two, then seems to act like the ignition is shut off, the engine seems to be shuting down, the dash lights come on briefly and the engine starts running again. This continues to repeat...Any ideas? Thank You, Duane Dee

Check the charging system for short cause it leading to ignition circuit and is causing a faulty reading....it gonna cause a lot of damage to the other component....like electronic control module,idle control sensor,map sensor.etc and it might damage the PCM(power control module...computer)...but track the short first by using a test meter...it simple...i will guide on the way or your neighbor..lol...good luck

Try having the charge system/ alternator load tested, if thats ok have the ignition module and coil pack tested at a local parts store.

Jaguar xj6 1997 sport. having problems starting it in Park and neutral

The leaver in the 4 litre is fully electronic, it's just a fancy switch. In the 3 litre it's somewhat mechanical. Ether way it sounds like an electrical problem with sensing the leaver position.

all of that stuff you describe is controlled by the PCM(powertrain control module) on the firewall passenger side. mine got shorted by an overly helpful drunk while jump-starting his neighbors car! you'll a wiring schematic to test if you have output from the pcm, if not it's $700.00 canadian for a new one. good luck

Something electrical is draining battery on 1987 XJ6;

Have you checked the alternator? The alternator may not be charging the battery. With engine running, check the voltage at the battery (it should be ~14V). If it's less than that, your battery won't charge properly. You can take your alternator to auto store to have it load tested also to be sure. Sometime alternator issues don't show up until it gets hot. Defective alternators have also been known to drain the battery after the car has stopped.

Electrical problem

I just had the same problem and I was driveing myself nuts trying to determine which control unit or relay was bad. I decided to go back to basics,starting with the battery,cleaning all the cables and makeing sure all the ground studs were tight. On the firewall there are 3 power supply studs,1 on the left,1 in the middle for the starter supply and 1 on the right.put a wrench on each connection and tighten them.Worked for me! Good luck
