My 2.5 litre 97 Cirrus will not start after PCM replacement

My 2.5 litre 97 Cirrus would not start so I took it to a local mechanic. They could not get a diagnostic readout because the 20 amp fuse for the PCM kept blowing. Their advice was to replace the PCM and they thought that the car should start right up afterwards. Per their advice I replaced the PCM (The numbers match and I even had it flashed to match the VIN and mileage). The fuse is no longer blowing but I have no spark. We don't know if there was spark before the PCM replacement or not. I also noticed that after I got the car back from the mechanic that there is oil on top of the number 1 spark plug that wasn't there prior to the visit to the mechanic. Any thoughts on that? Thank you!

    Thank you!

I do not know what the ASD relay is or even where to locate it. Is the Power Distribution Center where all the fuses are under the hood?

Please forgive my ignorance and thank you.

Have you actually tested that fuse to see if power is going through it? (with a test light)

i have been told that a replacement PCM has to have the same model-number as the old one, else there may be odd problems with running the car. make sure the same model is on the replacement and also, the vin is not needed however that may be wrong if you need to enter mileage info into it? was also told by mechanic that all the ones he had done needed NO Programming after installation, as long as PCM's had same model#.

Yes, the power distribution center is under the hood with the fuses and relays, I have seen a lot of problems with the ASR (auto shutdown relay) in these chrysler products.

97 expedition Put a new computer hook the battery driver side #2 ignition coil started smoking took it out cracked replaced it Just hooked up the battery back up not on the plug started smoking.Dan

You have coil on plug ignition? That top wire may be shorted to ground, somewhere? Or the pcm coil driver has a problem? If the coil caused the first pcm to fail and you didn't fix it, It might cause the new pcm to fail, also. Hope not. Just my opinion.

I have a 1999 chrysler cirrus and i jump started it and it started right up but when i turned the car off it wouldnt start again

took our kids 99 Cirrus to shop always had to jump the car. When mechanic was called he said he had traced a ground to under the fuse box.But now the car would not start or jump he said we need to reflash the computer. Took it to Chrysler dealer shop. They replaced distributor and computer 1300 dollars. They said it was fixed. Got the car back. Let it set for weekend. Tried to use it Monday morning would not start. Took the car back to dealership got a loaner vehicle. After a month dealership called and said the car had a bad battery. Now we had the kids replace the battery twice before we ever took it to the firsl shop. I think the car has a short draining down the battery and am considering a battery cut off switch to isolate the battery when not using the vehicle. Getting very discouraged and poor.

1995 chrysler cirrus lx-the engine cuts off when moving-driving

I have a '95 Cirrus LX 2.5L V6 (with 150k miles) that has been having the same problem -- it just shuts off unexpectedly while driving and then fails to start right afterward. No "Check Engine" light beforehand and no fault codes were stored. After setting for a while, the car would eventually start again. Initially this problem happened only seldomly but over several months it gradually became more frequent.

After doing a lot of research on the Internet and troubleshooting with the Haynes manual, the prime suspects were as follows:
1) Crankshaft Position Sensor (mounted onto the engine block under the distributor). I replaced this and the car started but it didn't last long before it abruptly quit again. This time, whatever was degrading finally broke for good; the car would no longer start even after sitting for a couple days.

2) Camshaft Position sensor and/or ignition coil -- (both are in the distributor on the 95 Cirrus LX 2.5L V6). I replaced the distributor (cost about $225). The car still would not start, though!

Using the electrical diagrams in the Haynes manual, I began troubleshooting and found that all of the top three mentioned items use the same +8VDC from pin 44 of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). I was only reading +4.88VDC -- way too low for for the two 'Hall Effect' solid-state sensors to work properly.

I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars buying a new PCM if I wasn't absolutely sure it was the problem so I took out my PCM (it's up front between the fuse box and the air cleaner on the driver's side and can be removed fairly easily). Since this is a single-board electronic device, being an electronics technician, I tried an old trick and froze the PCM for more than 12 hours so the circuit board and solder joints would contract and make a better connection. I then reinstalled the PCM and tried starting the engine -- and it fired right up and ran smoothly.

So, the PCM (P/N PO4606064) ended up being my problem.

NOTE: There are two replacement models of PCM for this car. One model is for cars with "Firm Feel Suspension (FFS)" and another model for those without; mine DOES NOT HAVE FFS. Make sure you get the correct one.
Also, on one of the threads on the Internet for another person having this same problem, a Master Mechanic stated that 'Firm Feel Suspension (FFS)' was the same thing as "Speed Sensitive (power-assisted) Steering (SSS)". I confirmed with the Chrysler experts that THIS IS NOT THE CASE! They are separate things -- according to my VIN, my car does not have FFS but it has SSS.

I took my car into shop they said i need a pcm so i bought one now my car still wont start.... the fuel pump turns on when i go to try and start it. it is getting spark.. so what else can it be?..

that pcm needs reprograming, you just cant buy one and put it in, the new computer needs to be programed or the car wont run, it might start but it will die out, have the pcm programed and if that was your problem the car should run. hope this helps.
